Appearance: Roman was at one point in time good looking. A handsome fellow if one will. Sporting suits, socializing, playing nice with the general populous of society. That is until he carved a mask out of the wood of his Father's Broken coffin Lid and it became permanently affixed to his head. Now, the rather tall muscular Roman Sionis, runs his own brand of the mob. Its like staring Death himself in the face, If death were to carry a high powered hand-gun and point it right between the eyes.

Personality:

Cruel doesn't even begin to describe the entity that is Roman Sionis. He is sadism in its highest form, He's more than satisfied with his life - though certainly there are those who'd cry and wish that that he wasn't. Those people are generally locked in basements in various buildings he owns around Gotham city, with their eyelids permanently forced open, and their tongues....reshaped.

Roman isn't that hard a guy to get along with; just stay far away from his bad side and make yourself invaluable to him. That's a damn good way to stay alive around Black Mask. See, roman doesn't get attached. He doesn't do attached. He mocks attached, mercilessly. So It does not bother him to kill off an assistant or six. He's on lucky number seven now. It amuses him to no end to murmur the sweetest things in the ear of someone whose fingernails he's removing, one by one. There's no sensation quite like the meaningless comfort you offer someone you're torturing. But it really doesn't compare to mocking a person in pain, honestly. While you're gouging out an eyeball or two, what could be better than offering to replace it with a blue and green gum-ball? Clearly, actually stuffing the wad of un-chewed gum right in there. But then you're wondering if you can still get a black eye without an eye...

Things tend to get messy, at that point.

It doesn't matter who you are, either; smart-ass street punk, a False Facer, even one of his caps: you fuck up or he gets a better offer, and you screwed. Loyalty is optional, at least for him; if he doesn't get it in the utmost, however, look out. In fact, that's a good rule of thumb, practice it whenever you're around Roman. Look out. Yep. Definitely a wise decision. He's got designs on the city; see, Gotham is his. Fuck the cops. Worthless pigs can't do shit for the place. Fuck the Falcone, the Maroni, the Viti - they're done. And especially fuck 'the Batman.' Some nut in a flying rodent suit isn't going to take away what he's been working toward for years, no fucking way. Gotham's going to sit in his hands within the year: Black Mask is going to be a feared name - more so than it is now - and it will be associated with the king of Gotham's underworld.

Don't be too fooled by the overtly sadistic face Roman often presents; he can be charming. When he wants to be, it's not that hard. The Sionis were one of Gotham's first families, probably second only to the Wayne. You have to be charming to get by in Gotham's high society, even as a child; it's about as hard as the city's streets are, though not in quite the same way. Roman can be pleasant, when he makes the effort. He just usually doesn't. Who needs to be fucking nice when you're leading the mob? There is that masochistic side of him, though. It's what allows him to be so thorough in the torture he's famous for: Roman knows what hurts, and how much it hurts, and how long a person can take it. He tends to push it further. Feels too good not to - and who doesn't want to feel good?

Roman is one sick puppy, there's no doubt in that. He doesn't like unnecessary touching. If you're unlucky enough to spend a night that doesn't involve pliers with him, don't expect any post-coital cuddling or pillow talk. Almost makes his skin crawl. oh. And God help you if he finds you guilty of hypocrisy. Doesn't matter how fast you run, you're dead. See, he has this utter loathing of hypocrites. Stems from his parents: in the privacy of the Sionis mansion, they spoke badly of many people, but none more so than the Waynes, their rivals in Gotham hierarchy. Nonetheless, they forced Roman into play dates with young Bruce; they attended the same schools, were forced to interact, though neither had any fondness for the other. Roman couldn't stand Bruce, but he hated his parents for being so two-faced.

Hypocrisy is not to be tolerated under any circumstance, on pain of eye-and-thumb removal.

Strengths/Abilities:

Physical Conditioning: Black Mask's physical attributes of strength, speed, stamina, agility and endurance seem to be on par with many extremely fit individuals.

Criminal Mastermind: Black Mask is arguably the greatest criminal strategist and organizer in Gotham, having taken almost full control of the city's underworld on at least two occasions.

Torture Master: Perhaps Black Mask's most defining skill is his mastery of both physical and psychological torture, which he often uses either to extract information, or simply to torment his enemies. He has been shown using a variety of crude, sharp-edged weapons, as well as the use of everyday objects including kitchen knives, steel pipes, and electricity cords which he slowly drips with water causing mild electric shocks. Expert in torture techniques of 14th century.

Hand to hand Combat: Black Mask is a highly accomplished athlete and hand to hand combatant who has been shown fighting on par with the likes of Nightwing, The Red Hood, Robin, Catwoman, and even Batman himself on at least one occasion. He has also shown skill as an acrobat and dancer when impersonating Batman and Orpheus.



Marksman: Roman Sionis is an excellent marksman who always carries at least two semi-automatic handguns. He has proven capable of hitting highly nimble athletes (like Jason Todd and Catwoman) in mid-air with relatively little effort and has also shot mid-flight batarangs away from himself.

Master of Disguise: Black Mask seems to be a formidable master of disguise as well as a highly gifted actor, as he was able to fool even the deductive skills of batman when disguised as Orpheus, and also led almost all of Gotham to believe he was Batman when donning his suit. He most often uses face putty or plastic masks to hide his skull-head and look like someone else.

Weaknesses:

- Laser like obsession with destroying Bruce Wayne and the Batman.




History: Roman Sionis, the original Black Mask, was born into a wealthy Gotham family. His parents were part of the Gotham Elite and as a result cared more about their social status then their own son. Just moments after his birth the doctor dropped him on his head, something his parents tried to cover up, fearing what the other families would say. Years later his family would again attempt to cover up an incident when he was attacked by a rabid raccoon. His family were friends with the Wayne's, and as a result he was forced to become friends with Bruce Wayne. It is strongly implied in the origin of the character that he was horribly verbally abused by his parents. During this time, Roman began to resent his family because of the masks they wore in order to become friends with the Wayne.

Following his high school years, he was given a position high up in his father's Company, Janus Cosmetics. It was here he met and later fell in love with a secretary by the name of Circe. However, due to her status, his parents had forbid him from seeing her, as a result, an enraged Roman burned down his house, with his parents inside. Upon their deaths, Roman seized all his family's fortune and control of his father's business, he was, however, not his father and as result did not meet much success. In his desire to prove everyone wrong and to stop the bleed in the company, he rushed a product out that eventually turned into a deadly toxin. Circe had become his finance, however she would break up with him in front of the entire staff, further humiliating the already embarrassed Sionis. At the same time, Bruce Wayne, who had become very successful, offered to bail the company out, with the stipulation the he appoint his own staff. Sionis agreed, but he was furious and visited his parents' caskets, breaking the lid of his father's. This broken piece would be carved into a mask, and he would become "Black Mask."
Sionis had become a natural at living a life of crime and soon had a gang working for him.

From here he started the False Face Society, which required all members to select a mask from his vast collection. They were to wear it on the job and in his presence. As Black Mask, he started his crusade against billionaire Bruce Wayne. He began abducting Wayne Enterprise employees. Once captured, he would put masks on them that contained the the same deadly make-up that had killed hundreds of women. He kidnapped Circe and disfigured her in an attempt to reignite their relationship. She eventually killed herself and as result Black Mask made a mannequin that he would converse with as if it was human. Since the victims of the abductions at Wayne Enterprises were found dead or disfigured, Batman began to investigate. He started dismantling the crime family and eventually found Black Mask in the ruins of the Sionis House. In an attempt to escape, Black Mask once again set fire to his home, however he was caught in the fire and would have died if not for Batman coming to his rescue. Ironically, the mask burned onto his face, leaving him disfigured as well.
