Welcome
It all started when a crystal dropped into existence, punched a hole in time and space and landed into the lap of one the most insane men to ever walk the Earth.
At first, the clown didn't know what he had been gifted with, stuck in his cell in Arkham, staring at the reddish purple crystal laying innocently on the dirty stone floor.
And then the voices started, telling him of another universe, talking of power and chaos beyond what he could have ever dreamed.

The Final Frontier [Darkhawk]
|
Post by Richard "Nova" Rider on May 25, 2013 13:45:36 GMT -5
Space. The final frontier. Except for time travel. And dimensional travel. So really, it was like the third final frontier. But it was a frontier nonetheless. With such a frontier came the possibility of exploration. Granted, most of the Milky Way galaxy had been mapped by the Nova Corps, but there were always areas of space that remained unchecked. These were usually small little nebulas or gas clouds. Nothing of such big interest to the Corps. Granted, the Corps didn't technically exist now. It was all Richard, and he'd decided that some of those blank areas on the map could really use some filling in. To that extent, he had left Earth and headed for the first hole in the map, which, conveniently, wasn't too far from Earth's solar system. Though the Worldmind insisted against it, Richard had gone anyway. To be fair, he did a lot of things the Worldmind didn't approve of.
As Richard arrived at the uncharted area of space, he took a look around. He had arrived at a cloudy nebula, which was pocked with a few asteroids. He had the Worldmind scan the nebula. Mostly, it was mostly comprised of space dust with some rogue elements, and the asteroids were, of course, rock, though there were some space metals running in veins through some of them. The Worldmind had also detected something large and metallic deep within the nebula. Richard suspected a spaceship of some kind. He wasn't sure what kind, however. Neither was the Worldmind. That was never a good sign, if the Worldmind wasn't sure.
Richard slowly edged towards the nebula. It was one of the thickest he had ever seen. He had trouble seeing through it. This was one of those times where he would kill for some kind of enhanced vision.

The Elder Alien explained that they had to stop here for a little while, and to expect some turbulence; he wasn't too good anymore at penetrating the core of nebulae. Yes, they were flying into a nebula, and all in the name of science. Not like Christopher Powell doubted the ship's ability to stand up to the searing temperatures that were certain to be found at the core of this beast, but he couldn't stand turbulence... It made him sick. If the Elder Alien wanted to, though, Chris was all up for it. Apparently he had chosen this one because it was possibly young enough to have a bit of the metalloid that made up the multiple 'Hawk suits, a rare intergalactic compound. Though not stronger than Adamantium or less shock absorbent than Vibranium, it was special in the fact that it was very good at keeping constant temperature and defending against heat and cold. As an added bonus, it definitely worked well against bullets and other Earth-weapons that Chris faced on a day to day basis.
Though Chris came close to puking several times, they were finally in the core and the Elder's intuition had been right. The ship had found an abundance of the alloy, and was harvesting it. The kid was languishing back in his guest room (He had needed to get away from the real world for a while, and so had requested he stay a bit on the 'Hawk ship) when the Alien called him to the bridge. "Coming, coming," Chris gave a yawn and a stretch before hopping up and down a couple times and exiting the room. Moments later he was down with the Elder Alien and the wrinkled being was pointing something small on the radar. "I've already scanned the source, and I think it's a member of the Nova Corps. I need you to go as Darkhawk and explain that it's us. Given the position that we're in, it will be pretty hard to see what exactly is the energy signature in the cloud. There's no need to fear him, he should know perfectly well what this ship is once you confront him." Chris nodded. This should be interesting, a chance to meet a Nova. They were pretty much intergalatic patrol. Most of them were pretty nice, or at least that's what was said.
Soon Chris propelling himself through space, using the special "winds" that the suit picked up on to transport itself through the cosmos. Almost before he knew it, he came upon the Nova; he was snooping around the cloud, trying to ascertain what was inside. Trying not to linger in blind spots, Darkhawk approached him. "Greetings, Nova." Chris's big, not-really-Chris voice met his ears.

Richard ventured deeper into the nebula. It was playing havoc with his suit's shields. He could feel every fluctuation and disruption. He attempted to boost the shields with a bit of the Nova Force, but he didn't know how long it would last. Supplementing the usually invisible shields with the not-so-invisible Nova Force gave him the look of having an aura of pure white light. The shields were holding, for now. He hated to think of what would happen if they failed. Fortunately, the last Nova hadn't ever been in that situation, and he intended to stay that way.
"Okay, Worldmind, scan this nebula for any life forms of all varieties." Richard said, gazing across the dusty-and-gassy expanse. He needed to be sure if there was life in this area of space, just to help with the mapping.
"Reading life forms." The Worldmind droned in response, after one quick sweep of the area. "Closest in proximity: Sector 0...1...6."
"Sector 016? But that's..." Richard turned around, charging his fist with a surge of Nova Force. "...that's right behind me." Upon seeing the Darkhawk suit, Richard lowered his fist.
"That's, uh, different." Richard consented. He hadn't run into the suits very often. They were few and far between in this galaxy. The Corps did have files on them, though, so Richard accessed them to refresh his memory on the suits and their powers.

The Nova seemed a bit surprised to see him, spinning with his fist clenched, ready to attack, or be attacked. Chris immediately stopped where he was, about ten feet from the Corpsman, with his hands up to show that he wasn't hostile, and had no intention of hurting anyone. Inside he cringed a little. He hoped it wasn't strike one for him, he would hate to be brought into Nova headquarters and be charged for disrespectful conduct, but sometimes no matter how careful one was, it was impossible not to scare people. It's not like he could knock, there was no door or even anything hard for that matter. However the Nova relaxed when he saw who- or what- it was, just like the Elder Alien had said. "That's, uh, different." He scratched his head, and pressed some buttons on a little device he had with him. Probably a file device, to truly determine if this lifeform was hostile or not, or to refresh memory on the multiple Hawk suits if he remembered some odd moment in training or education. "You're telling me." Chris would have grinned if he could. "I didn't know quite what to do myself, when I grabbed a random amulet off the shelf and became- this." Gesturing down to his body, he shrugged. Man, he still remembered his feeling of confusion when he leaped in front of his brothers and the bullets ricocheted. He had been certain the moment before, when he grabbed the amulet, that he was going to die, so why not go down with something in his hand? His brothers had more promise than he did; the sacrifice had been worth it. In some ways, he was glad that no one had died; and in others he wasn't glad that the Darkhawk had saved them all. There was something about the Raptor Fraternity that Irked him... though he really didn't know what. "the Elder Alien sends you his greetings. He would be out here himself but the mothership is still in the process of mining Raptorium Alloy from the core of the Nebula."
The faint white shields the Nova was putting off seemed to be ineffective this close to the heat of the star nursery. "Let's move out a little, shall we?" Even in this suit, made of the heat repellent metal, it was a bit uncomfortable. You see, it worked most effectively when Chris was moving. And so now when he was standing still it was as toasty as a hundred-degree day. Pushing himself back with a current, he moved about fifty feet back, where the temperature was more bearable.

"You just...grabbed an amulet? From where? Earth? Assuming you're human, of course." Richard said. "Hold still for a second. I'm gonna scan you." He just needed to stare at Darkhawk's form for a second. The Worldmind would take a scan of his body in an instant, which it did. From preliminary scans, it looked like Darkhawk was indeed not human. The Worldmind had caught on to the android parts like a moth to a flame. That would explain how he could survive out here, in the depths of space. Having an android body to act through was certainly a blessing and a curse out in these parts.
So they were mining Raptorium. That sounded pretty illicit to Richard. Maybe it was just the sound of the word "Raptorium". It suggested something illegal to him, and he couldn't put his finger on why.
"Worldmind, correct me if I'm wrong, but mining Raptorium is illegal under the constitution of the galactic mining guild." Richard said.
"You are indeed incorrect." The Worldmind droned. "The galactic mining guild does not prohibit the mining of Raptorium."
"Oh." Richard lowered his hand from the helmet. "It kind of sounded illegal, though." Not that he expected a computer, even if it was one of the more powerful supercomputers in the entire galaxy, to know what he was talking about.
"You know what? I agree. Let's back up. My shields are taking a beating." Richard moved back to Darkhawk's position. The moment he did, the shields went back to being invisible. Richard breathed a sigh of relief.

"Yes. Earth just happens to be my home planet, though I don't think the body underneath this armor is human. What tipped you off?" A bit of a sarcastic twinge (if that was possible with this suit's voice) was added in to give the Nova a choice wether to answer. Chris's query was pretty rhetorical yet at the same time partly a genuine question. The nomenclature could have done the trick; after all he was speaking English, an Earth language, and using words that other alien civilizations didn't use, like "Yeah," "shelf," and quite a few other words that were distinctly of Earth. Now that he thought about it, it probably wasn't a good idea just to have started this conversation in an Earth language. There were bajillions of other planets and Nova-worthy aliens out there; perhaps it was just luck that this one spoke his language seemingly fluently. Not to mention, humans weren't every alien race's favorite. It could have been something else other than that too, but really, Chris figured, that was the main clue. "Sure, I'll sit still here for a second or two." Braving the possibility of raising his body temp up by a good ten more degrees, Chris willingly stopped where he was, still as a statue, for the instant it took the scanner beam to look him over head to foot. It felt a little awkward, and he wondered what the computer was seeing underneath all the armor. Was it sensing a human? Or an android? Maybe he'd ask later, because he was really, truly curious. He hoped it wasn't seeing into the... private areas of his body or (to make that phrase even scarier, put in and for or) mind, that would be so awkward.
To be honest, the mention of Raptorium also tipped off something in Chris's brain that flashed a sign, "Illegal! Illegal!" However, it was perfectly well and good. The Elder alien had explained bajillions of times to his friendliest raptor that he had a permit to mine (though Chris had never seen it- apparently they were hard to obtain and so those that had them always kept them locked up, away from strange eyes) and many different aliens could back up his claim and prove him correct. Chris couldn't hear what the Nova's computer said back to him, so he had to assume that it said the mining of Raptorium was not illegal under the constitution of the Galactic Mining Guild. It should be illegal to mine all of it out of a Nebula Core, however, according to the Alien, Bokk: he learned the hard way that if one does so, they effectively destroy the nebula. However if one leaves only about five percent of the metal back in the Nebula, it will live on and actually triple its star output.
"I figured. It looked like your shields were struggling to keep you cool." Darkhawk nodded to the Nova as the two caught up to each other. "I myself was getting toasty, though Raptorium is very good at keeping one comfortable even in millions of degrees of heat." There was no doubt about it, the 'Hawk suits were all suited for the vacuum of space, designed perfectly by the Elder Alien to keep their hosts alive for months, even years, considering that their other body was safe and sound, and in hero form energy was expended slowly and carefully. It also worked well on the terrestrial sphere, though middle temperatures were a bit uncomfortable if Chris was to stay still for too long.

"Mostly, it's the cybernetic parts the Worldmind picked up beneath that shell of yours." Richard observed. "Looks like you're a dude trapped in a robot body or something. There's surgery for that on a planet in the Gowron system, unless you need that." Which he probably did. Regular humans, shock of all horrors, couldn't survive on their own in deep space. Besides, he wasn't sure that this guy would want to get rid of it. Robot bodies, especially ones made of a super-metal such as Raptorium, were super duper useful. Particularly if one was near a sun or other heat source. That metal could definitely take the heat. When this was over, Richard would have to look into improving his own suit with some Raptorium. He was sure the Worldmind could find some vein somewhere for him. If that didn't work, he'd just go to the contraband locker, one of the few bits of Xandar that had survived.
"Well, it's alright for some." he said, slowly slipping into a more comfortable state as the heat died down for him. That was a relief. He wondered about how the metal object could survive in such elevated temperatures. Oh, wait. Raptorium-coated spaceship, most likely.
"So, back to how you got this body. You just grabbed a random amulet from somewhere, and then...this?" This could be an issue. Undocumented alien technology on Earth. When he got back, Richard would conduct a full investigation, including going places where no-one wanted him to go.
