Personality: Richard generally displays a light-hearted, easy-going, cheeky attitude. He's more extroverted and gregarious than his Worldmind counterpart. He can't help but fling out a slew of one-liners when he fights. He has a bit of an eye for the women, and it can distract him a bit. He generally puts on a positive, optimistic attitude in life. When he meets someone new, he tries as hard as he can to befriend them. He feels that it is important to connect with his childhood, and as such, his love of Disney movies (and practically anything with the word Disney on it) remains with him in his adult life. If rules are set out for him, he makes an attempt to follow them to the letter.
Behind his positive attitude lurks an inner sadness. A sadness that is fueled by the fact that he needs the Nova Force to survive. A streak of vengeance also twists within him. Vengeance for the Nova Corpsmen who died. And guilt. Guilt that he wasn't able to fufill Dey's last wish. The last few molecules of his depression are still there, but they're fading away, bit by bit. He's still a tiny weeny bit unsure about the Worldmind being in his head, and the fact that it has the capacity to control his body. His anger, too, is terrible, for he doesn't even raise his voice. His rage festers deep inside him. He tries not to hold grudges, but he can't help but hang on to them.
"With great power comes great responsibility"
Powers: Richard is the host of the Nova Force, an energy source from another universe that used to power an entire army of Novas like him. It grants him incredible strength, enough to lift within excess of 100 tons easily. His speed and agility are increased drastically as well. He can channel the Nova Force to generate powerful concussive energy blasts, as well as open wormholes in space. The Nova Force can heal his wounds at an accelerated rate. It allows him to fly at supersonic speeds. He is also the host of the Xandrian Worldmind, the central computer for the Nova Corps. The Worldmind keeps his power in check so that he doesn't over-exert himself, and provides intel on enemies and allies.

Strengths/Abilities:
Richard has decent athletic capabilities. Having been raised by sports enthusiasts and the Nova Corps. He has sufficient knowledge in many forms of combat, though he prefers to use kickboxing with some Jeet Kune Do mixed in. Thanks to the Worldmind, Richard's intelligence has increased significantly from what it was.
Weaknesses: The entire Nova Force is coursing through Rider. He's become dependent on it. If it ever leaves him, his molecular structure will only be able to survive for two days until it breaks down, unless a suitable replacement energy source is found.
Without the Xandrian Worldmind's help, the Nova Force would drive Richard to the point of madness, or even tip him over the threshold and drive him insane.

History:
Richard Charles Rider was born in Hempstead, New York. Both of his parents were sports enthusiasts and owned a small sporting equipment shop. Richard grew up in a very fitness-oriented environment, and was introduced to several sports from a young age. When he attended school, he became a sports star, known for his good athletic ability but quite low intelligence. This identification of him continued when he went to the Harry S Truman High School, and joined the football team. In his second year, when he was about to score a winner for his team, he vanished into nothing. Teleported away by a force not-of-this-earth.
Richard came to on the floor of a spaceship, where a blue-skinned alien wearing a strange golden uniform, adorned with a red cape, greeted him. The alien, who Richard learned was called Rhomman Dey, was part of something called the "Nova Corps", and he had been tracking an alien criminal called Zorr. Dey had been injured fatally, and needed a replacement for him in the Corps. His dying act was to transfer his share of the Nova Force to Richard, who was transformed into a Nova Corps Centurion. He had all this power, but no guidance on how to use it. For a week or two, he took the life of a superhero for his own, until he was called to Xandar, the home of the Nova Corps. During the period in which he was trained in the use of the Nova Force, he learning about Rhomman Dey's role as "Nova Prime", and that Dey had picked Richard purely at random to inherit the role from him. Richard served in the Corps as a Centurion for a couple of years, until he expressed a desire to return home, to his friends. Even though he was forced to give up his share of the Nova Force, the Corps granted Richard's request, returning him to Earth.
Richard spent the next few years flipping burgers and desperately trying to make ends meet due to his disrupted education. His life took a downward spiral as he slipped into a depression, full of regret for leaving the Corps and guilt for not honouring Rhomman Dey's last wish. He believed himself to be slowly turning schizophrenic, as he could hear a voice in his head. He consulted a couple of therapists, who could offer no help. On the eve of his 21st birthday, Richard was confronted by a man with completely grey skin. The man introduced himself as Garthan Saal, a former Nova Corps Centurion, who explained that the Corps had been completely wiped out by an invasion on their homeworld of Xandar. He said that the entirity of the Nova Force had been transferred to the last named Nova Prime: Richard. The Force lay dormant in him after the Corps' destruction, and Saal wanted it for himself. He pushed Richard off a roof in an attempt to kill him and take the force. The adrenaline rush had the adverse effect and reactivated the Nova Force. Richard incinerated Saal, but found his power going out of control. The voice in his head emerged again, and a costume formed around him. The voice identified Richard as Nova Prime, and itself as the Xandrian Worldmind, the supercomputer that co-ordinated the Nova Corps. Richard remained on Earth, following the life that he had started when he was a teenager.

Writing Sample:
Another day, another hundred or so burgers flipped. Richard had hung up his apron and hat, and began the long walk home. He had no money for the bus. He'd spent most of it on lunch, and the little he had left wasn't enough for a ride home. And it was a long way from the burger joint to his apartment. Although, he probably couldn't call it his apartment for much longer. He was behind on rent again. All his money was going towards therapy. That voice wasn't going to fix itself up. He could still hear it in a corner of his mind. "Rider...Rider..." His last name. All it said was his last name.
One rather long walk later, Richard sat, curled up into a ball, on the roof of his apartment block, staring out at the sky. Funny. It seemed so big now. When he was Nova, he could have easily flown right through the horizon. But that was a long time ago. A better time ago. A tear formed in the corner of his eye. The Nova Corps seemed a world away. And still, the voice kept on speaking to him. "Rider...Rider...Rider...Rider..."
"...Rider? Richard Rider?" The sudden voice behind made Richard jump. He quickly brushed the tear out of his eye and stood up. "Yea...woah." The man who stood before him had grey skin. Not just pale. It was a perfect monochrome grey. Not unlike the natives of Xandar. Richard remembered that well. The alien was adorned in a large black coat and a hat, as if he was some sort of secret agent.
"My name is Garthan Saal, and I bring ill tidings." the alien spoke in a slow, solemn voice. Saal undid the buttons on his coat, and revealed a black tunic bearing an emblem Richard recognised immediately. Three circles joined together by two lines. The symbol of the Nova Corps. "I am all that remains of the Xandrian species as far as my knowledge goes. One week ago, Xandar was attacked, and the entire Nova Corps was eliminated, save for myself."
