Full Name: Virgil Hawkins
Code Name: Static
Age: 16
Date of Birth: April 12
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Species: Mutant
Alliance: Hero
Citizenship: DC
Canon or Original?: DC canon
"Victory is MINE Baldy!
And if you had any hair I'd take that too!"
And if you had any hair I'd take that too!"
Hair: shoulder-length, black dread locks.
Eyes: Big black eyes
Height: 5’7”
Weight: about 155 lbs
Distinguishing Marks: He has nothing that really stands out about him.
Appearance: Virgil Hawkins is a boy of no extreme good looks, generally thought of as just another member of the crowd. He stands at about 5’7”, not establishing him as one of the taller boys in the highschool. He is, by most standards, average. At least by surface looks, with clothes and such getting in the way. Actually, though, Virgil is a well-trimmed young man, keeping his body in good condition. Perhaps before he had not had much definition to his frame, but a couple of years shadowing as a super hero helped change that real quick. He has muscle tone and keeps himself in good physical shape, mostly because he has to. Working out has become a part of his life, since his electric powers require he keep a higher blood-salt level than most human beings. For him, there is a fine line between pigging out and eating what he needs to in order to keep his powers in check.
His methods have proven successful so far.
Virgil has black hair, dark eyes and is African American, though once again there is nothing overtly remarkable about him. Most girls don’t spare him a second glance, and he was once considered one of the more nerdy-looking of students. Still, there is a kind of geeky adorableness about him, especially when he offers one of his bright smiles. Where prince-charming looks fail, he makes up for with goofy charm and that kind of awkward look some just can’t resist.
Being a teenager with a stuffy parent and way too much to do all the time, Virgil has had little time for thoughts on tattoos or piercings. He has never considered venturing into that domain, save for one ill-conceived notion that getting an earring would make him look really cool. Thankfully, he didn’t go through with it. Actually, he has no piercings, tattoos or any other kind of differentiating marks. He doesn’t even dye his hair, though he does spend too long styling it sometimes. Really, he feels things like that might compromise his super hero identity, and so tries not to have anything that might be hard to hide between two lives. He’s also surprisingly lacking in the scar department, despite having some very difficult battles go down in his past. That can be attributed to his healing capabilities, leaving his skin baby-smooth.
When it comes to fashion, Virgil is fairly unimpressed. He doesn’t strive to be in with the latest trends, commonly wearing whatever happens to be in his closet that doesn’t smell like a dead animal. While he enjoys looking cool, he doesn’t need to look whatever ‘cool’ is right at that second. He’s comfortable enough with himself, now, that he can just buy himself what he likes and think little of what those around him might think as well. He’s a super hero, after all- who cares what they think when he’s out in an awesome costume, saving lives?
Speaking of his costume, it took a little change after his move from Dakota to New York. He now wears a deep blue body suit with yellow trim and a z-like lightening bolt on his chest. The suit goes up to a tight collar around his neck, and covers everything else below. He wears yellow boots and gloves, as well as a long blue and yellow coat to match. It’s something of a duster, with a high collar that pops around his neck and sleeves rolled up to grant him better movement. There is also a hood connected to the coat, which he can pop over his head if he ever feels like skulking around or generally looking like a total bad ass. To complete the look, he also wears a yellow mask that protects his ears and moves over his cheeks, down either side of his face. While his face is mostly free from obstruction, he does wear goggles that connect to the mask on either side. They, too, are yellow, with blue lenses that help keep him looking very cool. Oh, and they protect his identity.

Personality: Virgil is your basic high school teenager, excluding the side job. He likes girls, gets frustrated by things like homework and school bullies, and can’t go ten seconds without cracking a joke of some kind. In fact, his wit is a prominent feature, and most members of the student body know him as the boy who likes to make jokes and be sarcastic. They consider him a bit of a clown, when they’re not too busy thinking of him as a complete nerd. It is true that Virgil is a good student. He excels particularly in science and math, though his grades are good across the board. Even electives are not too difficult for him to get a decent grade in, though he does his best to avoid any music-type classes. Despite his love of rap music, Virgil can’t sing to save his life. Nor is he much for playing musical instruments, unless the air guitar counts. He rocks at that. In all, though, he prefers a science classroom to something more liberal, enjoying electronics and, in particular, computer programming. Recently he has developed a curious interest in electricity, and all the various aspects of that realm.
When not working on homework in his bedroom, Virgil enjoys playing video games and reading comic books. Actually, he loves comic books. Another factor into his ‘nerd’ reputation at school. Superheroes are very important to him, considering, and he looks up to many of them as idols, aspiring to be like them as he and his powers progress. In that sense, Virgil can come across as a bit innocent, easily upset when his idols slip from their pedestals. He expects the good guys to be everything his mind has made them to be, but they are mortal too and don’t always make the right choices. It can be very damaging to the teenager. His greatest interest lies in Green Lantern Jon Stewart, whom he considers the best of the best.
Though sarcastic, Virgil is a kind, generous young man who only ever seeks to help those around him, hero and civilian alike. Heck, he’d even help a villain if the conditions were right. For him, it is important to do the best that he can for everyone in need, as his mother had always tried to do. As his father does in his own way, working for the community center and counseling youths. Compassion runs in his family.
Being the moral type, Virgil does not kill, or even seriously wound others if it can be avoided. He deeply prefers zapping people until they fall unconscious or sticking them to walls until they can be picked up by the local police forces. Even in tough situations, he endeavors to find the least bloody path. It can leave him at a disadvantage in combat, as most of his enemies do not share his want to preserve life and seek to end his.
After what happened to his mother, Virgil has developed a keen hate of guns, almost to the point of fearing them. While he can stop bullets dead with his magnetic charges, he sometimes freezes at the initial sight of a gun. Disarming people is top priority in his mind, to ensure the safety of any civilians in the combat zone at any given time.
There is no brooding in the house of Hawkins. While he had his down days, as anyone might, he tends to stick to the positive side of life. He’s a happy, bright boy who’s spunk and good nature carriers moods in some situations. While he can’t make Batman crack a smile, he can still ensure that his friends have a good time while in his company. Perhaps some of his father’s counseling ways have passed down the line- Virgil likes to give advice when he can. It’s not always the best, since he’s still young himself, but he is never one to sit back and let things move along when intervention is needed.
His family and friends are both very important to him, as are the other heroes he’s met and worked with in the past. That makes him a loyal boy, always taking great care to protect and help those close to him. While he wants everyone to be safe and happy, he can’t help but have a special place in his heart for people he’s grown close to over the years.
When it comes to girls, all his confident hero capabilities and word play go right out the window. Unless in costume, hiding his true self, he can’t seem to talk to girls without running into problems. Pretty ladies and those he has a crush on are like his own, personal kryptonite, and so far he hasn’t figured out anything to counter the little problem. Well, aside from running away whenever possible. Only one girl has managed to slip into his friendship radius, where he doesn’t feel completely awkward talking to her.
"With great power comes great responsibility"
Powers: Virgil has control over electricity, putting it simply. Primarily, he uses it to shoot beams and zap the heck out of his enemies, but his powers extend far beyond something so basic. He has the ability to make crude shape from his lightening, such as neon-styled signs, nets or other simply objects. Ball lightening is a common weapon in his arsenal, which he shoots at foes like bombs, to discharge around a certain radius and catch them off guard. In fact, discharging electricity is something he does quite well, expelling various, sometimes massive walls of electricity to take out larger quantities of thugs or equipment in an area. His charges and disrupt equipment and render it useless, or even cause it to explode. When it comes to conductive objects, like metal, he can control them to a great extent, making them bend or alter shape at will. It comes in handy when bending guns in two to render them useless. He can even keep things in the air, and use them to fly if need be. A trash can lid can be his ride home if the moment calls for it. Some objects, however, his powers have very little effect on, such as wood and rubber. While he can sometimes lift them or send them flying, he can’t alter them in any way. They can be considered weaknesses of his. He can also create barriers of electricity, to keep himself protected from large or wide spread attacks. Lastly, one of his favorite things to do is charge the particles around a person or some object, causing them to stick to things like glue. Maybe that’s the kid in him.
Beyond offensive capabilities, his powers can also be used for a variety of other means. He can create wireless communications between himself and anyone he sees fit to speak to, and can tap into frequencies like those used for radio or other forms of transmission. His powers can, naturally, charge objects and allow them to be used, like TVs or CD players that had been previously turned off, or even unplugged. Being his own power source can come in handy. His powers have also granted him the unusual ability to sense when power has recently been used in an area, making it easier for him to find where activity may have once been while on the trail of a bad guy. He can also use his power to light up areas, even creating his own flashlights of varied sizes and range.
Being a giant battery of sorts, Virgil can drain power from equipment just as easily as he can give it. In fact, he needs to- his powers are not constant, and after excessive use he can be drained to the point of passing out. It is physically hard on him to use large amount of his ability for extended periods of time, and he has to find means of recharging to feel better. With his powers dependent on his body and his surroundings, smart villains have sometimes attempted to drain him of his energy, or confine him in an area he cannot gather electricity from. Effective ways of keeping him trapped, all things considered.
Recently, his powers have evolved a bit further, granting him better healing capabilities than he was used to. He can suffer great damage and recover from it faster than a normal human would. However, this does not make him immune to pain, and wounds that would incapacitate someone normal would do the same to him, even if they don’t last as long. Still, having bruises and cuts heal up quickly makes it easier for him to trudge through tough fights.
Another ability his powers have granted him is the resistance to mind control. Being that the brain is an electromagnetic organ, Static can actually keep his from being altered. Mind control devices do not work on him, and those with telepathic powers may have a tough time keeping him under their control.
Weapons In addition to his powers, Static has a few pieces of equipment that help assist him in his heroic ways. He has a sparkly new flying disk with a holographic interface and the ability to collapse into various pieces and reassemble themselves into different forms. It enables him to fly around using his electricity to keep the disc airborne. To help with his close-combat skills, which are otherwise fairly lacking, Static has acquired a collapsible bo-staff, which he uses along with his powers to give him an edge.
Strengths/Abilities: Pretty much pointed out in the powers section.
Weaknesses: Static isn’t the best swimmer, and isn’t very good in water. He’s been working on his power’s weakness to it, but he, in generally, still isn’t very good around the stuff.
His power can be drained, leaving him weak and helpless. He also cannot conduct his electricity against certain materials, such as rubber and wood.

the sanest man alive to lunacy,"
History: Virgil was a happy kid from a happy family, living in Dakota without a care in the world. His mother worked as a paramedic, while his father was a counselor for troubled youths at the community center. They were good people. Happy people. Unfortunately, sometimes bad things happen to good people. When he was a young boy, his mother was killed by a stray bullet during some gang violence down by the docks. She had been there to help out, only to find herself another victim of the needless fighting. Since that day, Virgil’s father dedicated himself even more to helping troubled teens out of the gutter, in an effort to keep them from falling into gangs. Meanwhile, he struggled to raise Virgil and his sister Sharon on his own, wanting to give them a comfortable life even without a mother to love them. His efforts were a success, as both of his kids grew into fine teenagers. They were honest, good-natured and had good heads on their shoulders. A father could not have been more proud to see one start highschool, and the other college.
However, Virgil couldn’t say he particularly enjoyed his first few weeks at Dakota High School. His love of science and math, along with his freakish knowledge of all things comics-related, pretty much destined him to a day filled with wedgies, swirlies and stolen lunches. One boy in particular, a young thug named Francis Stone, really enjoyed seeing him suffer, often picking fights with him just because they happened to be in the same hallway. Virgil could only assume the boy was jealous of his intelligence and wit, but could never prove it. In any case, justifying the actions of some gang member punk didn’t make them hurt any less. The bullying might have gotten the better of him, if not for the friendship he had with a young boy named Richard Osgood. He and ‘Richie’ stood up for one another, always there to provide comfort and support when needed over the years. Virgil also had the support of a young gang leader named Wade, whom he was also friends with. After a nasty encounter with Francis, it was Wade who was there to offer him some help. Unfortunately, Wade was insistent that he toughen up and join his crew, wanting Virgil to help him out in an upcoming gang battle. Confused, and more than a little frightened, Virgil ended up at the scene of the fight without really knowing what he was doing there. All the gangs showed up for the fight, but the battle barely got started before police forces intervened. From helicopters high in the sky, they shot smoke canisters to try and scatter the crowds. Unfortunately, one smoke bomb hit a canister of unstable mutagen that had been waiting for transport at the docks, igniting it and every canister nearby in a massive chain of explosions. The gas that burst from the containment spread over the docks, coming in contact with almost every gang member on the scene, as well as Virgil. Many of the people there died that night from the unstable chemicals, many others mutating painfully into monstrous creatures. It affected each person in a different way, from changing appearances to granting strange, sometimes uncontrollable powers. The incident became known as the Big Bang, and the mutated civilians from the ordeal were dubbed “Bang Babies”.
Virgil had been in the midst of escape at the time of the Bang, and had only inhaled a minor dosage of the gas. Still, when he woke up, he too had found himself mutated. He quickly discovered that he had the power to control electricity, which he found totally awesome. Right away, he decided to share his new-found gift with his closest friend, Richie, showing him his powers. Together, they decided he should get himself a costume and be a super hero. What teenager with a suddenly awesome power wouldn’t do exactly the same thing?
As it turned out, it was the right time for a super hero, too, as many of the surviving gang members soon started using their powers for criminal purposes. To counter their boosted methods for causing mayhem, Virgil dawned a costume and became known as Static, putting shocks to the systems of criminals everywhere. Primarily, he stuck to fighting off Bang Babies and people connected to what had happened that night, but he wasn’t against helping police and other super heroes with their troubles whenever possible. For him, just being able to be more than a bullied science nerd was the greatest gift he could have been given. He soon gained a great reputation within his city, most delighted to see one good mutant in a sea of evil Bang Babies. But it was never about fame for Virgil. He just wanted to do the right thing.
His career led him through many tough battles and several convoluted plots, which he always managed to come out on top of. He learned the finer points to his powers, watching them evolve and become even greater right before his eyes.
It wasn’t long after he had started fighting crime that his friend, Richie, also started to show signs of mutation, possibly from his previous exposure to the gas from Static’s clothes. He became super-smart, and was able to invent several gadgets to help him fight alongside Static. He became known as Gear, and together they were a nearly unstoppable force for good.
However, an accident in Dakota meant Static leaving home with the rest of his family and moving to New York. The details of the incident were not to be discussed, but Static knew it was for the best that he leave his old world behind and focus on something new. It wasn’t long after his arrival that he gained a new friend, a new costume and new equipment to aid in his fights, which he was not going to put on hold just because he was in a new city. New York had just as much crime that needed to be stopped, even if there weren’t as many Bang Babies.
To keep himself busy, he got an internship at S.T.A.R. Labs, working after school to better his knowledge in the electronic field.
It soon became apparent that New York had its own super-powered villains, and that his own powers were still evolving even away from where the gas had originated. Not only did he manage to defeat his first villain in a new city, but he also managed to reconnect a severed arm –his- with little after effect. Feeling energized, he was more than ready to take on what the large city had to offer.

This was both totally awesome, and really bad all at the same time. Ever since he had first started doing the super hero thing, Gotham City had been on the mind of Static Shock. Come on: Batman’s home turf? What could possibly be cooler than that? And while he had been to the place a couple of times, he had never really gotten a good look around, or done any decent crime-fighting in the place. It had been kind of a dream location to save people in, much like Metropolis or Coast City. Places where the big heroes worked- places where the true heroes worked. Sure, it had been great saving Dakota from Bang Babies, and helping out in New York was cool too, but somehow it just didn’t seem as epic as stopping some monster from going after the Daily Planet, or keeping the streets of Gotham safe from crime lords. No, he knew that getting to work in places like that meant really hitting the big league.
But this… was not what he had been expecting for his grand entrance into real heroism.
At first, he had thought one of the Bang Babies he had been fighting –who had followed him from Dakota just for revenge- had somehow transported him there with a new ability- like getting him out of the way so they could go about and have fun on their own. Well, if it was a Baby, it had one hell of a strong power- leaving Gotham was proving all but impossible. No amount of electrical interference or discharge seemed enough to let him pass the strange barrier around the city limits. One minute, he was flying for home, the next he was heading back to the center of Gotham, like he had taken one too many turns. Only he hadn’t taken ANY turns. It was… hard to figure out, putting it mildly. And he wasn’t a slouch when it came to the thinking department, either. Which was why he quickly gathered that it wasn’t because of a Bang Baby that he was there. One: he hadn’t been fighting anyone with teleportation powers. Two: that kind of range would just be impossible for one Baby to accomplish on their own. Three: Not being able to leave was a different kind of power altogether, and most Babies only had one.
But that didn’t explain what WAS going on, nor did it give him any means of getting out again. Suddenly the place he held in such high esteem was his prison. How the mighty fell! Even massive cities.
Okay, that didn’t mean he couldn’t look on the bright side, though. Maybe he was trapped, but it was still one of the coolest places ever, and he finally had his chance to make a difference there. He could fight crime with Batman! A dream come true. Or… a dream come true for the third or fourth time, but still. How could he be upset when there was a real chance to do good in the air? No pun intended.
Because he happened to be hovering over the city.
Sighing heavily, the young boy offered himself a smile, trying to boost his own spirits as he looked down at the streets below. So communication with the outside world was cut off. So he couldn’t get home to his family and friends. So he couldn’t protect the people who were important to him.
There was a reason he had appeared in Gotham, and he was going to make sure he figured out what it was, even if it meant taking a break from New York for a little while. Sometimes, there was no room to be a kid. He knew in his hear that this was one of those times.
He needed to get to work. Focus on finding out what he was meant to do there, or finding a way back out. Either way, he refused to sit around and mope about it.
Slapping his cheeks, young Static took a deep breath, sparks flying as he charged himself up. No time like the present to start figuring things out, he figured. So he lowered himself to the streets below, to see if he could gather some information. Or maybe stop a crime or to.
The latter seemed the winner of the day, as out of no where Static heard the loud, unmistakable bang of a gun. Clearly, he had come at just the right time. Or had been summoned. Whatever. It didn’t matter what he chose to believe, he just needed to get back to the grind.
Fists clutching at his wild currents, a smile emerged over Static’s face, his hover board directing him towards the gun fire.
