Welcome
It all started when a crystal dropped into existence, punched a hole in time and space and landed into the lap of one the most insane men to ever walk the Earth.
At first, the clown didn't know what he had been gifted with, stuck in his cell in Arkham, staring at the reddish purple crystal laying innocently on the dirty stone floor.
And then the voices started, telling him of another universe, talking of power and chaos beyond what he could have ever dreamed.

What are we waiting for? Why don't we break the rules already? I try twice as hard and I'm half as liked, but here they come again to jack my style [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: 8a8a8a; opacity: .7; border: #550505 solid 4px; width: 470px; padding: 15 0 15 0px;]
The next hour or so found Tony drifting in and out of consciousness. The blood pouring from his nose had congealed and dried into hard, rough red patches that dotted his skin and matted his beard.
The indent in his chest, broken glass where the arc reactor was situated, was laboring his breathing, but the suit- despite its state of disrepair- had kept him alive and mostly in tact. He hadn't broken either leg or arm. Maybe his ribs, he wasn't exactly sure, and definitely his nose. Possibly a cheek bone or an orbital socket as well.
When he did open his eyes, he could only open the right one so far before the swelling and bruising around it swallowed up his brown iris again.
He was beat up, to say the least. JARVIS had contacted the authorities as soon as he could, and had called Pepper soon after. The strawberry-blonde CEO of Stark Industries had been asleep since she'd had to work the next day. Tony had been out late, against Pepper's preferred curfew... and he had paid the price.
"Miss Potts will be here shortly," JARVIS reported dutifully in Tony's ear, taking comfort in the fact that his master was awake once again.
Despite being awake, though, Tony's eyes were still shut. The blinding red and white lights of the ambulance above him was hurting his head even more. He was laying on the ground as the paramedics rushed around him, trying to figure out how to help or what to do or how to even get his suit off of him. He batted them away, insisting that he was fine and could do this all himself, and managed to sit up without anyone else's help.
He winced as a piece of stray metal cut into his chest, but instructed the EMT's to look after the other people leaving the aftermath. They were more important than he was right now. He could at least keep himself together.
"Jarvis, I told you not to call Pepps," Tony grumbled to himself as he sat on the ground, leaning against the bumper of the ambulance. All he needed was to rest for a moment... just... rest.
"I do apologize, Sir, but she requested differently."
"Oh great, so you're listening to her more than me now?"
"Of course not, Sir, I just-"
Tony waved his hand, as if the physical action would cut the A.I. off. "Just shut up, Jarvis." His arm dropped to his side as he focused on breathing correctly.
"Yes, Sir."

The guaranteed late night, plus a flight, plus work in the morning, plus a cold coming on? Pepper was not in the mood for a party. She'd texted Tony before she went to bed to either get another room for the night or not make too much noise when he came in. Pepper was known for throwing things if woken up before her desired time. One thing would wake her up from a dead sleep no matter what and that was JARVIS. She listened to the A.I. and all she needed to hear was that Tony had been injured to send her into defensive C.E.O/Girlfriend mode.
She tore through the hotel room dressing, brushing her hair, grabbing a brief case and an over night bag which she threw Tony's sleeping clothes, tooth brush and other things into. She was also on the phone with Happy and he was getting dressed and met her in the elevator. Soon they were quickly on their way to the hospital Tony was being taken to. "Damn it, Tony..." She said under her breath, rubbing her face. She was fresh faced, no make up, her hair down and still slightly kinky from a late shower. When she came in she went straight to the yellow tape around the scene, "I'm here for Tony Stark."
The woman rolled her eyes, "You and every cute blonde in this place, take a step back."
"Ma'am, with all due respect to your profession, and at the risk of sounding incredibly pompous and full of myself... Do you have any idea who you're talking to? I'm Virginia Potts, C.E.O of Stark Industries and general Tony wrangler, now if you'd be so kind as to tell me where he is at and when I can see him, I'd really appreciate it." Pepper was tired, angry and scared. She was in no mood to be pushed around by a woman that was standing in her way. This was the woman who had said she would stay behind to make sure everyone was gone after a violent attack of controlled bots, thanks to a certain tool named after a tool. She wasn't a coward, oh my no. She was a lioness.
The woman took a small step back and acted like she was going to call for back up. "Look..." Pepper looked at the name tag on her hip, "...Jean, if what I was told is true about Tony's condition he's going to need a new reactor and fast or else severe damage could be done. Maybe even death and if the highest paid and most skilled surgeons in the world can't get this shrapnel out of him, I'm sure as hell convinced no one here can." Pepper folded her arms across her chest, "The longer you want to argue about this, the closer we get to losing one of the best minds in the world. Also, it requires very small hands to replace the reactor if Tony can't and I know how to do it. So, are we done here?"
Finally, the police officer conceded and let Pepper past, convinced that the sharp tongued woman was in fact the real deal. She rushed over to Tony, stopping a few feet away and putting a hand to her mouth and almost took a step back. After taking a moment to collect herself she moved to Tony's side. Her tears wouldn't help Tony at all, she needed to be strong and try to separate professional Pepper from girlfriend Pepper. That seemed to be getting more and more difficult lately. "I have a reactor." She said softly, her hand finding his gloved one and taking it, "Tony, I think we need to get you out of the suit to really see what's going on. Your breathing doesn't sound great and if you've got broken ribs you could have more internal injuries than you realize." Her hand never left his though, even as she dug around in the briefcase Happy had brought over to her.
"Remind me how to take the reactor out, baby." She said in a hushed tone, unable to stop herself from saying the pet name. They had done their best to keep their romance as much out of public view as possible by her wishes. The last thing she wanted to do was to have to constantly answer about exactly -how- she got such a prestigious position in the company from secretary and assistant. When they wanted to officially go public, they would, but now wasn't the time. She needed the Avengers to calm down a bit, things would work out, at least she hoped.
"What took JARVIS so long to call me?" A slight accusatory tone to her voice, knowing Tony well enough to know he wouldn't want her out here, worrying and yelling at cops and EMTs, even if they did deserve it... just a little... okay maybe she should apologize to Jean. She'd send some flowers and a gift certificate to the department in the morning.

Welp. There went his moment of rest.
As soon as Tony heard Pepper's voice in the distance he couldn't help but smile. She sounded worried. Then he realized what that meant. She sounded worried. Ah, crap. She was going to freak out when she saw him.
He still remembered the time when Justin Hammer's androids had nearly killed them all and the spazz attack Pepper had had on the roof with him that night. He'd tried so hard to calm her down before but... now? He was a wreck. With every movement the arc reactor threatened to cut into his heart before even the shrapnel could. Not to mention the wires were still loose and shocking the hell out of him. Tony was sure he was probably no longer bleeding in his chest anymore. The electricity had probably cauterized any open wounds by now.
"The longer you want to argue about this, the closer we get to losing one of the best minds in the world. Also, it requires very small hands to replace the reactor if Tony can't and I know how to do it. So, are we done here?" He heard Pepper shout from far away.
He raised his eyebrows, breaking open the fresh cut in one of them again. Damn girl. And she'd even called him one of the best minds in the world, aww- wait. One of the best? Who the hell else did she have in mind?!
His face screwed up as he eventually saw first Pepper, then Happy come skidding to a stop close to him. "Who else is one of the best minds in the world?" He asked, mocking her voice.
But she didn't answer him. She was freaking out, just like he knew she would. Down on one side of him, pulling out medical supplies, Pepper rambled on while Happy was on his knees on Tony's other side, reaching out to touch him but too afraid to.
"You okay, Boss? You look like ya been put through the ringer."
"Meh. I'm not any worse than after I fight you," Tony said with a grin. His broken nose, plugged up with congealed blood, was giving his voice a stuffy sound.
"Remind me how to take the reactor out, baby. What took JARVIS so long to call me?" Pepper squeaked.
Tony grabbed her hand with his only good one to stop her from touching all over him and making things worse. He appreciated the attention, really he did, but... she was panicking. She was bound to make a mistake and he couldn't afford that right now.
"Pepps, babe. Calm yo-self." He said jokingly, forcing a laugh out to hopefully help her keep her composure. But the force of the laugh sent another shooting pain through his chest and he sucked in his breath sharply.
Happy and Pepper were still staring at him. But rather than admit to Pepper that he'd tried to keep JARVIS from contacting her at all, Tony dodged the question altogether and instead focused his attention on the spare reactor in Pepper's hands.
It was his old model, the first one he made with the new element that replaced the cold-fusion nuclear reactor that used the palladium core. He still had yet to name the brand new element that was installed into each of his arc reactors now (he had several back-ups since dealing with Obadiah Stane), but he was considering "coconium" or something similar due to the weird, tropical taste it left in his mouth.
"Sir, to apply the new arc reactor, we will first need to remove the chest plate of the suit and extract the malfunctioning RTD core," JARVIS said, audibly through Tony's suit so that all three of them could hear him, hoping to ignite Tony to action.
"Jarvis is right," Tony wheezed, moving his hand to the side of his suit. "I gotta get the suit off."
"Sir, the suit's locking mechanism is jammed. I cannot release you."
"Figures," Tony grumbled. He reached up his side to tug on the metal, and saw Pepper watching him worriedly again. "You know what? I got this. Why don't you guys go get breakfast or something? Ooo, better yet. You should go pick up some burritos. God, I'm hungry. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. Burrito. That is the important thing to remember. And not just one of those crappy Taco Bell half-burritos either. I'm talking, like, Chipotle spicy beef and beans and cheese. No onions, though. You know I hate onions. Oh- and, uh, extra sour cream. They always rip you off on the sour cream."

He was human, she knew this and he constantly put himself at risk. She could take that. What she couldn't take was him wanting her to not be there. Her hand gripped onto his tightly. A quick glance up to Happy and he slid over a little, blocking them as Pepper pressed a gentle kiss to Tony's temple.
She was worried, sure, she had grown to love Tony. Why? Even she wasn't quite sure, but she had. She moved to help him with the suit when JARVIS interrupted. She frowned and tilted her head as Tony began to ramble on about burritos. Her attention was grabbed by Happy who was motioning to a cluster of reporters shouting her name. She sighed a little bit, not able to be dutiful girlfriend for very long. There were a million fires stoked by the night's events. Innocent people were injured, killed, maimed... All at the center were people who were supposed to help and people who were there to hurt. There was a bad habit of the media though to paint them in the same light. "Tony, keep trying to get the suit off. Faster you get to the hospital and fixed up, faster I get you home and play nurse." She leaned over to him, getting into business Pepper mode which also meant saucy Pepper mode. "I know how much you love playing nurse.'
She stood and moved over to the reporters getting right to work. After several minutes she seemed to have calmed the frenzy and reminded them that they needed to allow the emergency workers to do what they were there for. "I'm sure in the morning there will be an official release on what exactly happened inside the building." After the short 'press conference' Pepper was on the phone with everyone from other workers of Stark Industries who saw it on the news, SHIELD agent friends, Rhodey, everyone. Finally, she put her phone on silent and tucked it away, moving back to Tony where she sat back down, "You're not going to shake me tonight. I've calmed down, so if I can help, let me know. Also, Tony, if you ever talk to me like I'm some random person you've just hired again. I will end you."

It didn't help him any that she looked incredibly sexy right now and even though he hated to see her panicking, he had to admit that it turned him on that she was just so worked up over him. He didn't really... well, expect to work people up like that. It intrigued him and terrified him at the same time.
Because he didn't want to make her worry. He didn't want to make her fear for him. But what could he do? He couldn't just stop being Iron Man. In fact... if he wanted to admit it... he was growing more dependent on his alter ego. The suit helped him, not only helped him emotionally but also physically. His bones didn't creak so badly and he didn't get winded when he was in it.
Unless, of course, he was lying on the ground about to die because some asshole giant with a gas mask decided to knock him around like a rag doll.
"Tony, keep trying to get the suit off. Faster you get to the hospital and fixed up, faster I get you home and play nurse. I know how much you love playing nurse."
Tony's eyebrows raised at her as she stood up and walked over to the paparazzi crowd. Play nurse, huh? Well if that wasn't incentive enough to get out of this damn metal shell, he didn't know what was.
He was not going to the hospital though. He didn't care what she tried to pull. Those places reeked of death and creeped him the hell out.
"Sir, is there anything I can do?" Happy asked, concern still coloring his tone.
"Yeah," Tony replied. "I was serious about that burrito."
Happy couldn't help but smirk at his boss's sarcasm, but he stood up to comply anyway. When he'd finally left, and Pepper was still busy on the phone with God knew who, Tony used the opportunity to get the most painful part of the process over with.
He didn't want her to see him like this. So he pushed himself up enough that he could get leverage on the bumper of the ambulance, and maneuvered his hand under the section of the armor that was stuck. He squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his jaw, tugging on the piece. But it was lodged.
Instead he took his fist and pounded on the metal, hoping to knock it loose. On the third agonizing strike it jogged loose and JARVIS finished unlocking the chest piece while Tony just sat there, trying to bite back his whimpers of pain.
He quickly managed to discard the chest piece and the shoulder pieces and shimmy out of the arms just as Pepper came back over, leaving him in his nearly-shredded, blood-stained tuxedo and the pants-part of his Iron Man suit.
"You're not going to shake me tonight. I've calmed down, so if I can help, let me know. Also, Tony, if you ever talk to me like I'm some random person you've just hired again. I will end you."
He tried grinning at her, but it came out as more of a grimace. Damned if she wasn't serious and Tony had to admit that really did scare him. She could be quite the frightening individual.
He knew there was a ring-shaped red stain on his shirt, surrounding the arc reactor just like he knew that it kept sparking. But he couldn't keep Pepper from seeing it. She was determined to stay.
"Mister Stark, if Ms. Potts is ready, we may begin extracting the short-circuiting RTD core."
"Jarvis, she'll shock herself." Tony grumbled. He swatted Pepper's hands away gently, insistent that he could do this part himself because he didn't want her to get hurt. He quickly undid his tie and unbuttoned his shirt. The blood had already dried on his abdomen, which sported a few good-sized bruises from ribs that may or may not be broken.
He looked at her, judging to see if she could handle this, and gave her a small smile even though he was going through hell inside. "Ya ready? It's gotta be quick, Jalapeno." He used her pet name with his smile as he reached down and quickly turned the malfunctioning arc reactor. "First you gotta pull the casing up so it's not lodged in my chest. Then just hook it in. You can do it, Babe. It's a walk in the park. You've done it before."
He knew she was panicking no matter how well she hid it. She'd become increasingly good at that as they'd dated, but she still couldn't pull one over on Tony. He hid his emotions every second, every hour of every day and no one was the wiser. Not even Pepper. He could read people pretty well by now.
He breathed out and tugged the arc reactor, dislodging it from where it was stuck.
