"Victory is MINE Baldy!
And if you had any hair I'd take that too!"
And if you had any hair I'd take that too!"
Hair: William has short, black hair, which is usually kept neat and tidy when it's not in a helmet-hair style from constantly wearing his mask. It is something of a nerdy hairstyle, generally, with nothing remarkable or otherwise outstanding about it.
Eyes: William has beady brown eyes which always seemed to lack a certain amount of humanity within them. Even when smiling or being kind, his eyes seem to indicate a malicious, eerie intent.
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 165 lbs
Distinguishing Marks: Sometimes he doesn't have a hand. Pretty distinguishing.
Appearance: Without his super villain costume, he is a fairly unassuming man with nothing overly special about him. He isn't particularly intimidating and he isn't usually one to go out of his way to make a name for himself. More often than not, he's the forgettable man in the background. The one no one suspects is about to break into a ballroom blitz.
However, he does a complete 180 when he's in his Black Hand garb. Even a ridiculous outfit made out of body bags comes across as terrifying when worn by the man. Somehow, it shows off just how buff and intimidating the normally meek man is, his large, rippling muscles apparently ready to rip heads right off the shoulders of men. In either appearance, he always has a somewhat wicked air around him, though it jumps from mildly creepy to menacing when he's running around as a villain in tights. Something in his eyes just lets people know that he is not someone to be trusted and he probably has more than one weird hobby.
When wearing his black ring, his appearance takes and even sharper turn for the sinister, with a more evil-looking outfit and the general appearance of someone who had been rotting for a few weeks in the ground. His skin is cracked and festering, his eyes completely emotionless. There is even that lovely stench of death surrounding him, making the experience available for multiple senses. Mostly, he is not someone you are going to ask to pose for you like a french girl.

Personality: William Hand was a genius, who had a deep love of inventing and building new things. However, his views were always somewhat different from what most people would consider 'acceptable'. From a very young age, he was fascinated with death, longing to experiment with it in whatever way possible. He was always clever, even as a child, and knew it was best to keep his love for death hidden from the world. He even learned how to lie to psychiatrists as a child so they heard from him what they needed to hear to think he was perfectly acceptable.
As he grew, so did his love of death. He could even be called something of a necrophiliac, nestling and spooning with dead bodies simply because it brought him great pleasure. For him, death was something magical- something fascinating that even his brilliant mind could never fully understand. His love of death made him perfect to take on the role as the embodiment of it through the use of the black ring.
When William began hearing voices, after his encounter with Atrocitus, Hal Jordan and Sinestro, his mental stability wavered even more, and he grew to hate light. More than that, he grew to hate Green Lanterns, and sought to kill Hal Jordan and any like him. He made himself a costume and became Black Hand, naming himself that because he had always been considered the black sheep of the Hand family. He devoted himself to a life of crime, but constant defeat at the hands of Hal and other heroes only drove him further into madness. He comforts himself by lying with dead bodies in a grave after each defeat.
When talking to him, he doesn't have a strange manner of speech or any kind of twitch- he is pretty intellectual. But it doesn't take long for people to start feeling very uncomfortable around him. Even when he isn't under the guise of Black Hand, he is creepy at best, mentioning things most humans would be hesitant to discuss. He's a creeper, for sure.
There is no sense of kindness or justice inside of him. What he does, he does simply because he loves death. He loves seeing people die, and memorizing their reactions. William is not someone who can be reasoned with, nor does it do any good to plead for your life.
For him, death is fun.
"With great power comes great responsibility"
Powers: William was experimented on by aliens, who gave him the power to absorb the life force of humans and restore his right hand. The more people he steals life from, the more his hand is restored.
Weapons
-- Black Power Ring: With the use of his ring, Black Hand can reanimate the dead into corpses who serve his bidding. He also needs to kill humans and take their hearts to recharge his ring, each heart restoring .01% of power. Beyond all the normal powers of a power ring, his ring can also read the emotional states of beings as colors on the lantern spectrum. Black lanterns can also re-kill anyone who had died before and possess them. To a smaller degree, it can mimic other lights of the spectrum,
-- Energy Device: He has a power rod that he stole from Atrocitus with the power to de-power Green Lantern rings. It can use that stolen energy until it needs another recharge.
Strengths/Abilities:
- Master intellect - William is incredibly smart and can think his way out of most situations. He always seems to have some kind of plan in mind, which he is ready to use at the drop of a hat.
- Photographic memory - William can remember everything he sees, and reflect on it when needed. He keeps records of everyone he has killed, and everyone he has learned may have had an experience with death in the past. He uses his ability to suit his mission against all life.
- Empowered by death - Being the embodiment of death itself, much like an entity, it is really tricky to kill this guy. William has died and come back several times. Every time he his 'killed' it takes a few minutes and he will again be brought back to his state of un-life.
- Unlike regular black lanterns, William is not controlled by his ring. He is the embodiment of black and acts more like an entity than a ring bearer. He retains his personality. William also draws power not from his ring, but from himself.
Weaknesses:
- Thanks to losing battles, losing his hand, and generally killing himself more often than not, William is extremely mentally unstable. It makes it hard to predict him, and equally hard for him to pull himself together and think of what he wants to do.
- If he doesn't absorb enough life force energy, his hand cannot fully form. This doesn't seem to be the case while he is wearing his black lantern ring, however.
- Black lantern rings are weak to the white life of light, and can be destroyed.
- Emotions are generally a weakness to black lanterns, who are dead, emotionless beings. Strong emotions can combat black lanterns. Any lantern paired with green can kill a regular black lantern.

History: William was the son of two well-off parents. They ran a coroner's office and funeral home, and were never cruel or apathetic towards their children. They were good enough people, and William never suffered any truly traumatic experiences during his youth. All the same, he developed a strange obsession with death, even from a very early age. He always considered the death fascinating, and even shared his first kiss with a corpse. As he grew into a young boy, he tried to keep his urges under control by engaging in activities like taxidermy. However, he exposed his habits when he killed the family dog just so he could stuff it. From that moment on, his parents endeavored to help him, sending him to many psychiatrists for the rest of his life with them. William, who was always a very smart boy, knew how to tell them what they wanted to hear, so he wouldn't be sent away and could continue his necrophiliac ways.
As a young adult, William had an encounter with an alien named Atrocitus, who attacked him saying he was the embodiment of black. Hal Jordan and Sinestro show up to stop Artocitus, and from that moment on William starts to hear voices. They tell him to steal the energy rod Artocitus has been using against the Green Lanterns, which he does before making his escape. With the device, he accidentally kills his first victim, discovering quickly that he actually likes murder.
The voices in his head continue to speak to him, telling him to loathe the Green Lanterns. To put an end to them. Driven mad by the constant prodding, he decides to devote himself to killing the green light. He makes himself a costume from body bags and calls himself Black Hand, accepting that he was the black sheep of the Hand family name.
Through their many encounters over the years, Black Hand was driven further into insanity, and to love death. He loses his hand in a battle against Green Lantern and his friends, though eventually get it back through some rather strange means. He is abducted by aliens who experiment on him and grant him the power to absorb the lifeforce of humans to reform his right hand. It only aids in his lust for death.
Eventually, the voice in his head tells him to take the next step in their plan, and he returns to his former Hand home, killing his whole family before ultimately killing himself. He is then given the first Black Lantern ring, and is told he is the embodiment of death itself. He proceeds to raise an army of the undead to unleash chaos on earth, killing and reanimating various heroes throughout the planet. Many come under the control of the black rings, and it is only because of the discovery of the life entity that he is eventually foiled once more. The white ring forces him away from his black ring and brings him back to life, effectively ruining all his hard work. He was then forced into the indigo tribe, compassion shoved in his face.
He eventually escaped from the indigo tribe by killing himself, a black ring slipping out of his mouth and attaching to his finger, bringing back the undead Black Hand for more zombie fun.
