Today was a slow day for Roy. He had done all of his normal activities. Gotten up, made breakfast, helped dress Lian (she liked to do as much as she could by herself), brought Lian to pre-school, etc. But for some reason each minute seemed to drag on longer and longer. Unfortunately that meant he was thinking more and more of donning the costume once again. His mind fought, completely ripped onto two different sides. He would be helping people. Doing what he loved to do. He’d be making a difference in the world and would be a hero. But then there was the other side. He had responsibilities. He had a daughter. A job. A life. Lian relied on him. He was in constant danger as a hero. Facing life threatening things day-in and day-out. He couldn’t take the chance of leaving Lian without a father should something happen to him. And what if they found out who he was and hurt his baby girl? Je couldn’t take that chance. And Lian wasn’t the only person that relied on him. He counseled recovering teen drug addicts. Roy knew from first hand experience that some of those kids had no one other than him. Some were living on the streets. Some orphaned or runaways, others kicked out by parents or guardians just as he had been when he was seventeen. He knew that for some of them, talking to him was the only thing keeping them from relapsing. Just knowing someone cared if they woke up the next day.
Roy sighed and rubbed his eyes as he sat at a small table in his bedroom. He was playing with an arrow in his hand. Even after he quit the hero game he had kept making arrows. It was a hobby of his. The specific arrow he was playing with in his hands was a bright red, except for a black cylindrical tip rather than a regular arrow tip. It was an arrow Roy was quite fond of, an Electromagnetic Pulse arrow, or EMP arrow for short. this baby was capable of knocking out whatever electrical appliance he needed. From a security system to a bank vault to a robot. It was quite the useful tool when it was needed. He switched the arrow in his hand for a brick red arrow with a head that looked exactly like that of an explosive arrow. This was possibly Roy’s favorite arrow. Designed to look like an explosive arrow that wouldn’t effect some targets who might just catch the explosive or let it hit them to taunt Roy, the arrow, rather than explode, would release copious amounts of high-density polyurethane foam encasing the enemy. Of course, many targets it could be intended for could break out it still was good for stalling or for stopping an enemy to get a good hit on them. Not to mention it was great if you needed a safe landing.
Roy picked up his phone off the table and checked the time. It was about the time he normally left to pick up Lian from pre-school. He liked to be a couple of minutes early. Roy got up and grabbed his brown leather jacket and slipped it on before absentmindedly running his hand through his short, ruffled red hair. Roy grabbed the arrows hid them in his usual hiding place. He grabbed his keys and gave a longing glance back at the hiding place where he also hid his old costume. Roy sighed as he walked down the short hallway in his apartment and walked towards the door. But before he could reach the door, the strangest thing happened. The doorbell rang. Certainly not something Roy was expecting. He couldn’t fathom who it might be. Maybe one of the teens he counseled. Or maybe Mia and Oliver had another falling out. Mia, his successor, was the only member of the arrow family he was in touch with. It was years since he had seen any of the others. Of course, there were reasons for that. Mia had been there not so long ago. She and Oliver had an argument over her medication and whether she should be allowed to fight crime the days she had to take it. Roy grasped the handle of the door and opened it skeptical as to who it was. Looking out the doorway he saw one of the last three people he ever would have expected to show up at his door. He literally would’ve expected government agents or the president before her. His usually happy face immediately turned sour.
