Take a little time to yourself and everything will be clearer when you come back... Fury had practically ordered Natasha to take some time to herself after the disaster that had been Loki's invasion, a time when the fate of the planet had been placed in the hands of a team that had barely managed to come together in time to prevent the end from occuring. Everyone else was off doing something for themselves, with Thor having returned to his world in order to deal with his brother, Bruce heading off somewhere with Tony and Captain Rogers going who knows where. The Avengers had done their part in keeping the world safe for another day and now they were no longer needed. She had expected to return to the life she had lead before as a SHIELD agent, someone who could go out at a moments notice to deal with the issues of the world or take down some kind of underworld demon who threatened the lives of innocent people. That was what she did now, in a futile attempt to make up for all of the lives she had taken, all of the hopes and dreams she had destroyed in the years before. She was trying to deal with the red in her ledger. It had been on her mind a lot lately, ever since her narrow escape with the Hulk in the Helicarrier. While they had been in a rather heated conversation to begin with, it was the attack on the flying base itself that had sent Banner far enough over the edge that he had lost control and allowed the green monster to come forth, causing quite an amount of pain for the already injured Natasha. Even now she still felt the pains in her hip and leg from that attack, having been forced to first run on it in order to escape with her life and then fight Clint as she struggled to break Loki's hold over her former partner. And that hadn't even been the worst part of it... Sitting atop the Eiffel Tower, on the highest point she could possibly reach without causing mass panic by having people think she was a jumper, Natasha stared out over the city of lights and love as she struggled to push aside the thoughts that invaded her mind. All she could think about, all she had seen in her dreams for the past several nights, were the images that had been there on that day, when she wasn't sure how much longer they would remain in the air. The wild look that had been in Banner's eyes haunted her at night, as did his earth-shattering screams as he transformed from the doctor into the monster. She could hear him roaring as he followed after her, swinging his massive arms and pushing other agents aside with enough force to break their bodies before they even landed...and then she remembered Coulson... Natasha impatiently brushed a tear from her eye as she remembered her fallen comrade, a man she had come to greatly respect over the years. Coulson had given his life to ensure that the Avengers were able to come together as a team, giving his all to protect the earth they both loved so dearly. It pained her to think of him, to remember that she would not see him the next time she headed back to the Helicarrier. It wasn't fair, she thought to herself as the breeze pushed her auburn locks around her face. It just wasn't fair. Between the nightmares of dealing with the Hulk and her sustained injuries while fighting Clint, Natasha was still a little bit of a mess when it came to dealing with the loss of someone she considered to be a friend. And she had so few of those in this world to begin with... |
