Welcome
It all started when a crystal dropped into existence, punched a hole in time and space and landed into the lap of one the most insane men to ever walk the Earth.
At first, the clown didn't know what he had been gifted with, stuck in his cell in Arkham, staring at the reddish purple crystal laying innocently on the dirty stone floor.
And then the voices started, telling him of another universe, talking of power and chaos beyond what he could have ever dreamed.

The weatherman's wrong.
I don't know if the festivities will still be going on into the late afternoon, those clouds are looking miiiiiiiighty hefty and the weather calls for rain, rain, rain!
The sky was particularly clear, the blue a welcome sight to the New York sky. No clouds in sight. The sun was bright and yellow and round.
The weatherman lies.
[the sound of a TV channel changing]
Ol' Jack Frost might be nipping at your nose early this year with highs in the upper forties and lows in the upper thirties for this evening.
It was sixty-two degrees outside. No. Sixty-three. Adrienna had miscounted the cricket chirps. Sixty-three. Warm, cool, not cold. Not frosty. Not freezing.
The weatherman is a do-do head.
Adrienna knew better.
That's why she didn't bother bringing her coat. Because it was warm, not cold. And she was wearing her favorite tee shirt. Miss Charity got it for her. Miss Charity was her foster guardian. Not a mom. Not a mother. Guardian. And she had gotten Adrienna her favorite tee shirt ever in the whole wide world.
It was dark blue and had a big red spider on the front. On the back it said, in super-cool white letters, Spider-Man.
[sound of a drum beat]
March. March. March. March down the street. March across the crosswalk- the crosswalk had a white man on the sign that said when to go. March past the homeless man whose shiny shoes made obvious he was pretending. March beyond the bakery- the bakery sells a baker's dozen, which is thirteen, not twelve. March to the park. The park. The Central Park.
It was the center of Manhattan. It was decorated. Because it was Spider-Man week. There were kids in costumes. And adults with funny hats. And bug-related food items. And games and pin-the-web-on-the-New York Menace. That's what the newspaper had read once.
Adrienna did not believe that. The newspapers were wrong.
The weather man's wrong.
Cloudy with a chance of scattered thunderstorms in the late afternoon.
It was six o'clock. It was past "late afternoon". Still no storms. Do-do head.
Adrienna was at the park for one reason and one reason only. She had a plastic net in one hand and a pen and pad clenched in the other. She was going to catch herself a Spider.

Spectacular? Sensational! Amazing! An entire week dedicated to him! Well, Spidey, anyways, but this was MAJOR progress from where he was when he had started, when many had jeered at him when he swung by. Tony had Stark expo to feed his ego, but did anyone throw him an appreciation week like this? People loved Spider-Man now. He was their hero.
He was also, unbeknownst to him, Ri's hero.
Spider-Man was actually an honored guest, but there were several Spider-Men walking around in costumes. He practically blended in. Some were taller, some were short and stout, but Peter was juuust right in his suit, walking about like a normal citizen in uniform and loving it. It was something he really wished Uncle Ben could have lived to see.
He had a welcome ceremony to attend in a short time, but Peter the Amazing Spider-Man was set on enjoying the sights before he basked in glorious applause. He stopped himself there; it was not Peter Parker that was being celebrated, but Spider-Man. Spider-Man, he reminded himself, and where there was once pride, the slightest twinge of jealousy extended towards his other half. Peter could be congratulated for many things, but one part of him would always remain separate from the others. Two lives in one.. he was feeling the dichotomy even more today. Spider-Man would be receiving the key to the city. Peter Parker would be taking his picture. There was a huge gap there.
Spider-Man had been laying in the tall grass and flowers by the gardens, so far unseen by all (he had been cloud-watching, admittedly, and also daydreaming about Jameson's boiling head having to watch this event from the window of his office. His desk had a clear shot view of Central Park. Peter was sure the man was regretting his decision to set his office up there now).
He stretched there, and then sat up. Just like that, his masked webhead poked his head up from the grass, scanning the length of the park quickly for signs of a hot dog cart.
"Or maybe I should try some web cotton candy.. that looked good..."
Peter, having been staring at the clouds for some time not only moments before, glanced upward at the sky once more. There was not a drop of rain to be seen.
"Channel 9 needs to hire a new meteorologist. The weatherman's always wrong..."

Wrong sizes. Everyone was the wrong size. Too tall. Too short. Too fat. Too skinny. Too lumpy. Too straight. Too stinky. Spider-Man didn't stink. Or, at least, she didn't think so. What do spiders smell like?
Not like him. Or her. Or that boy. Or that old lady. Nope, nope, nope.
[Swish, swish, swish!]
Left and right. Her eyes went left and right. Up and down. Still no sign. He had to be here. He had to come! Why wouldn't he come? This was his party! He had to come!
Her little heart was beating out of her chest. Her knuckles were white from squeezing the handle of her net and her pen so hard. Panic swept over her. Too many people! Too many strangers! Maybe she should have stayed home with Miss Charity! Where was Spider-Man? The world was too bright! Too loud!
Tears pricked at her eyes and her pace quickened. Gotta find him. Gotta find him. He had to be here! The sky wasn't rainy. The weather was perfect!
With each step her pink gym shoes left in the ground, a shoe-shaped area of brown grass was left. It faded and faded, the blades curling until they snapped off. Dead. Brown.
Whoa. Calm down, Ri! Calm down!
But he wasn't here! Why wasn't he here?
She stopped at a bench and stood there, tears trickling down her cheeks and sniffling. She raised a white-knuckled fist to her eye to wipe away the salty liquid when she saw a head pop up out of the grass a few yards away. She froze, eyes wide. Tip-toe closer. Closer. Closer.
Adrienna shoved her pen and pad in her back pocket and gripped her butterfly spider net tightly with both hands. Tip-toe. Quiet. Don't spook him.
She stood on her toes to get a better look. He wasn't looking at her. He hadn't seen her. Hm. Right size. Right skinny-ness. Right costume. The lines were in the correct place. The spider was drawn correctly. Could it be? Had she found him?
The excitement at this new prospect had her shaking in her gym shoes. Her knees were knocking together. Gotta be quiet. Sneaky. Ninja.
She was so close now! The ground was making too much noise. The grass kept growing when she stepped on it. It was too noisy. He would hear. But he wasn't! She was right on him now!
She lifted up her net, high above her head, eyes wide and glassy.
[Thwap!]
The net only got about half-way down his head before it stopped. Darn. She knew she should have gotten a bigger net.

Even with all of his spidey-sense he couldn’t have predicted that he would have been ensnared in a butterfly net by a fifteen year old.
Pardon him, spider net.
He shot up his arms immediately to give himself up. “You’ve captured me! I surrender!” he laughed and still squatted, shifted (more on hobbled) his direction to face his captor. He pointed at the pamphlet illustrating the different species of spider to be found in Central Park for the scavenger hunt, “I don’t think I’m on that list, but I guess to be fair you should get a prize.” Peter nodded thoughtfully, the net still on his head bobbing along with him.
“And what do I call my captor?” he wondered, finding it odd he hadn’t sensed her but not questioning it.

Oh my goodness. Was this really happening? Was it actually happening?
Adrienna watched Spider-Man flail around because he'd been captured by her, and then laughed. But then... then he started talking to her! He was talking to her!
She let the net slip out of her hands, and her pen and pad dropped too. All she could do was stare at him while he spoke to her. She hadn't even really heard what he was saying because she was too caught up in the fact that Spider-Man was actually talking to her!
Then he pointed to her pamphlet sticking out of her pocket and asked for her name.
He asked... for her name?
Name.... She thought to herself. Name. He needed her name.
Adrienna opened up her mouth, but nothing came out. She closed it again and looked frustrated. Why didn't her words ever work like anyone else's? Other people opened their mouths and their words walked right out. Adrienna opened her mouth and the words were too scared to even peek out.
C'mon, Name, don't be scared. It's Spidey-Man! We like him! She nodded, securing the thought in her head. Yes. This time she and her name would agree on something. She would make that pesky word come out!
Adrienna took in a deep breath and a wide smile crossed her face. Her brown eyes sparkled as she looked at Spider-Man, and still with some difficulty, announced, "Ri!"
After the nickname, the only part of her name she could say, exploded from her, she broke out into a fit of giggles, holding her hands up against her mouth with fingers curled in toward her face. Her feet alternated stamping on the ground, making her vibrate with excitement.
Suddenly, where she was standing, flowers bloomed and opened to the sun, lifting up her autograph book and pen with their strength before the small book got too heavy for them and it dropped back to the ground again.

Peter watched the girl seem to bubble over like a boiling pot only to spout out her name in one breath. Ri, she called out, and Peter nodded, the net bobbing along with him as he did. She had such enthusiasm for her name, for one word. Peter had tens of thousands of words he could say and he didn't have one ounce of the joy she had saying that one syllable. Rianne? Rianna? It didn't matter what her whole name, because she so wholly, happily identified with that one combination of letters.
She was Ri. Ri. And she was happy. Practically dying with a case of the giggles. All he had to do was be there, and she was this happy. He'd never really experienced that feeling before. Most people fell under some gray area in the emotional scale. You had dull 2's and lively 7's, but Ri soared on 10.
"Hey, if you get this riled up someone's going to notice I'm the real Spidey." He figured. If he could just. Aha! He slowly reached out and touched her arms, a friendly gesture, but soon felt himself filling to the brim with her energy. He let go, looking downward through the pink at the newly sprouted flowers at her feet. Were those there before?
He put a finger to his lips, "Secret." he said quietly, figuring her green thumb was a secret as well. Not everyone was kind to mutants, if that's what she was, even ones as cute as little Miss Ri.

She giggled furiously as Spiderman read off what he was writing to her. She tried to keep it a secret by covering her mouth with her hands, but the giggles were escaping anyway! Darn it! Bad giggles!
She took in a deep breath and held it, letting it poof out her cheeks as Spiderman handed her book back. But the look didn't last long, broken by a tiny grin and an excited gleam to her brown eyes.
This was too much! Spiderman was here in front of her and he was talking to her and he had said words and then he had written words and he had touched her notebook and now she was holding it and oh my gosh!!!!
All around where she was standing, the grass shot up several inches. Flowers bloomed like they'd just seen the sun, and a ladybug that had landed on her shoulder grew twice its original size.
Ri wouldn't have noticed except for the grass tickling her legs. She looked down to see that she was about waist-deep in foliage that hadn't existed only seconds before. It formed an almost perfect circle around her and then suddenly dropped off to the evenly-cut short grass of Central Park.
She blinked at where her shoes had been moments before and then looked up at Spiderman. Her big, innocent eyes suddenly grew almost mischievous as a small impish grin grew on her face. She raised a finger to her lips in the same way he'd done before and whispered, "Sshhhh.... My secret."

When Ri imitated him cutely, Peter had half a mind to scoop her up and kidnap her right there in plain sight. He could raise her as his own. Hey, he wasn't really into the idea of a sidekick before, but he could make an exception for this kid. Teach her the ropes of superhero work, guide her to greatness. She could be a little butterfly in pink and villains would surrender at her cuteness. That'd be a nice world to live him.
Gah! He wanted one. They let kids in his apartment right? They could call it the spider den or something snazzy like that- their very own crime fighting HQ. Spiders eat butterflies, but that never stopped Batman and Robin. He was pretty sure a bat could take down a robin in the animal kingdom.
Peter. You can't just go around kidnapping children to raise a crimefighting army. No matter how adorable they are... he scolded himself, and resisted every urge to hug the tiny critter in front of him.
He took the notebook in his hands, practically twitching he had so much energy then. "To Little Miss Ri," he read out loud as he wrote on, "The best-dressed and most talented arachnid catcher in all of New York City and keeper of secrets. I want to steal your shoelaces. Signed, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man... There ya go, kid." he tried at his fanciest signature he could muster and handed it back to her neatly.
