Welcome
It all started when a crystal dropped into existence, punched a hole in time and space and landed into the lap of one the most insane men to ever walk the Earth.
At first, the clown didn't know what he had been gifted with, stuck in his cell in Arkham, staring at the reddish purple crystal laying innocently on the dirty stone floor.
And then the voices started, telling him of another universe, talking of power and chaos beyond what he could have ever dreamed.

It was December and the winter breeze was cold. The student work a thick midnight blue coat as she walked down the dark streets, the watch on her left wrist giving little light, but announcing the time; 11:43. A massive backpack rested on the girl's back, mostly filled with blankets and mugs. As often as she could, Lilith would go out on the streets to try and bring some hope and happiness to the homeless. People saw them every day, but they never really thought about them, especially as the nights became colder. Yawning, Lilith stopped to rub her eyes. The fact that she had University meant that it was hard to spend as much time doing this as she would like to. Only Fridays and Saturdays permitted her to be able to work such late hours and not to miss her education. Still, that didn't stop her working earlier hours during the rest of the time. Instead she would just fit it around her work. Delicately stretching, the girl then began to move on, eyes flickering around for any sign of someone who might need someone to help them, give them some warm soup or a blanket. So far, Lilith had only spoken to one homeless woman. Thankfully the woman had a blanket, but she had welcomed a cup of warm soup. Even under her heavy coat, Lilith could feel the cold and she shivered as she walked. It had to be even worse for those who had to live and sleep outside because they had no home. The girl felt really lucky to have been born into a family where there was money. Briefly the student thought about her home back in England. Of course, it was no longer her home, she lived here. Every now and again, the girl wondered how the people she knew were getting on. Remaining in contact through email and Facebook was not easy. At the start they had spoken to her more often, but that had drifted away. Still there was no reason to think about the past when there was work to do and people to help. Lilith had noticed a shivering figure curled up on a bench under the harsh light from a lamp-post and the nineteen year old walked over to the person. It was a man, probably in his late fourties. "Are you okay, sir? Do you need a blanket?" Lilith asked, taking in his light coat which was rubbed away and patched. Already the girl had pulled ouer a blanket from her bag and held it ready with a smile on her face. "Thank you, miss." The stranger said, reaching out for the blanket that Lilith held out to him. "I also have some warm soup, if you'd like some." |
[/b] The girl said, already turning to get out a cup and the thermal flask that contained the soup. "I'd like that miss." The man replied and Lilith poured him some and handed the cup to him before placing the flask back in her bag. "You do know that there's a shelter that offers some accomodation and food only a few streets away."[/b] Lilith checked. Some people didn't want help, others didn't know. It was always best. "Is there, miss?" Clearly this man was one of the ones who didn't know. Lilith nodded with a smile and gave him directions and even walked him some of the way. "You can keep the blanket."[/b] Lilith told him as they parted ways. "Most kind of you miss." The man said and the student was just happy that she had hopefully brightened up someone's next few days. I hope he soon gets back into work. Lilith wished, it turned out that he had been in a poor job until he was fired and couldn't pay the rent. The man was only recent to the streets. Pulling her coat around her, Lilith stopped outside a dark alley. She thought she had heard a sound. Inside alleys it was often warmer, the winds were blocked and this one was a dead end, if she remembered correctly. "Hello?"[/b] Lilith called softly, taking a step forward. School always taught you not to go into dark alleys, but Lilith didn't want to possibly leave one person alone without warmth. She thought she heard a small reply. What if it was a scared child? Taking another step forward, Lilith glanced at the ring on her finger and closed her palm before walking into the darkness.[/div] tags: Open! word count: 798 muse: Within Temptation notes:You can decide what is in the alley. Post by Tony "Taskmaster" Masters on Dec 8, 2012 20:04:56 GMT -5
Nights like these were best suited for jobs like this, cold and dark, where no one could see him. This career didn't list 'Glamorous' as a trait often used to describe it, but still.. this sort of thin turned a mans stomach. Tony had worked in this field for years now, done terrible things and worked for terrible, evil organizations. Not ever job was something he bragged about at underground night clubs, not everything he did was a badge of honor. Still, reputation is everything for a contractor in this line of work, and to get to the top you've gotta start at the bottom.
What Taskmaster hadn't known was that he'd still be doing these sorts of jobs.. but it was part of the whole gig. A good, reliable client, made a fair request of him.. and he had to accept. The job was easy, and was technically within the boundaries he'd given years prior. It was still bottom of the barrel stuff, they had come to him because he of his professionalism, they could trust things not to go over board. After all, they wanted the right man to die, not everyone that looked like him. It all made sense, it was all part of the job, but hunting the homeless wasn't something any human with a heart could do easily.
The man in question had once been part of a large syndicate that his clients were involved with. The operation fell under, the heads scattered, and only now this one resurfaced. He had lost his mind, becoming some sort of babbling lunatic over the years due to drugs. One of the underworlds most powerful men had lost everything, and now lived on the streets and raved about a past no one believed. The younger generation didn't care though, the fact that someone might believe him was enough reason to take care of it.
It wasn't easy for him, but he couldn't burn this bridge at this point in life and keep on top. So, for the past several weeks, he had been out hunting at night. Stalking the homeless was harder than most would assume, they were naturally paranoid and tightly bound socially. Anytime someone saw him, even just a glimpse, the streets were almost dead at night for days. Still, patterns eventually develop, and prey was prey.. no mater how hard they try to fight it. Eventually the hunter will always get his mark, the only way to avoid that is to stop being prey. These poor bastards though, they don't get that option and probably never will, a depressing reality.
He had found the man he thought it was, a man named 'Gogo' by the local hobos; due to him having seemingly boundless energy, and a talent for ranting endlessly about his 'fables'. Gogo fit the age given, the ethnicity and general appearance matched up.. this was most likely the right guy. Gogo liked to stay alone by a barrel he considered his and used for fire on cold nights. All Masters had to do was move the barrel into a dead-end alley and wait.. the man would find it and start his fire as he did every night. The mans mind was so far gone that he didn't even consider how or why the barrel had been moved, he simply stumbled around until he found it.
From the fire-escape above Taskmaster watched the event transpire, it was almost painfully easy. He felt like he was picking on the elderly doing this. Unlocking the escape ladder he slid down along with it just short of the alleyway below. The sudden movement and sound startled the homeless man, who stumbled back from his freshly lit fire in fear. Dismounting the ladder Taskmaster stepped forward, the flickering lights from the barrel illuminating his skeletal visage.. sparking immediate panic from his prey..
While mumbling nonsense and waving his arms the man backed himself into a corner, sniveling for mercy in his own way. Taskmaster stepped closer, and with each step the mans cries and flailing became louder and more pronounced. Tony almost had to look away, the end-game was in sight and it was only getting harder on him. Drawing his sword he stopped just feet short of the man, now curled into a ball before him.. rocking back and forth in silence.
"I'm sorry.." the mercenary spoke to him from behind the mask, coaxing the victim to look up at him from behind his arms. "..please" Gogo mustered the sanity to breath out this one audible plea. Focus, Tony had to focus.. this was his job, this was the deal.. and he had to finish it. "I'll do it quickly.." Masters replied, stepping forward once more and raising his sword into the air. Gogos eyes stared into the empty sockets of the mask, trying to find an ounce of humanity in his assailant, but Taskmaster had already hidden all of that away for this. It was too sad, and had to be ended while Tony still had the stomach for it..

It was probably something like a fox, but a small light caught her attention, a fire. Some shy homeless person? Still, Lilith remembered all the warnings about not going into dark alleys. But what if someone was hurt? What if they needed her help or something to get them through the night? So, the nineteen year old continued to move to move forwards, ready to help. She had soup and blankets. If the person was hurt then she could call for an ambulence or something. Why didn't they have the NHS in America? Free health care was useful, especially for those too poor to afford the prices that came with health here. "Hello?" |
[/b] Lilith called again as she took another step closer. Now she was completely in the alley and the darkness seemed to press around her. But Lilith had hope, all would be well, she would help whoever, or whatever was in here. So she pressed onwards, moving closer to the light. It was clearly a fire and so Lilith guessed that it must be a human here. Probably too shy to answer her calls or worse case senario was ill and didn't want to spread his or her illness. But Lilith was here to help and she didn't care if she got ill. As long as she helped this person and gave them hope for the future everything would be fine. An illness would only keep her down so long. There were two figured, Lilith realised as she moved closer. She was about to call out again, but frowned. It was clear that one was threatening another, with a sword. Lilith froze, not sure what to do. Her powers were limited, without a Green Lantern (she'd never met one of those) she could only create shields and fly. "I'm sorry.." That was weird, sorry for having a sword and threatening someone. Why do it if you regretted it? Lilith fiddled with her ring. "..please" Okay, the strange attacking man wasn't nice at all. Lilith lept to action. Throwing her backpack on the ground, she wipped out the mask she kept in there and leapt towards the scene, using the ring to fly while putting the mask on. "I'll do it quickly.." Her mask was on and she was between the man with a sword and the target. True her costume just consisted of a mask, but the ring didn't give her the clothing unless near a Green Lantern. Besides, that wasn't important. The important thing was saving the man who was about to be killed and Lilith raised a shield around them. "Do not worry, all will be well."[/b] She said to the cowering man, giving him a smile and place her own pale hand on his for a second before turning her attention to the attacker. Drawing herself up to full height, Lilith stared at the stranger. The mask seemed to be trying to make any of his targets afraid, but Lilith refused. Everything would be fine. "You won't be killing anyone. It is not right."[/b] Lilith said strictly, trying to sound like a teacher. They stopped bullies, and this person was not different from a bully. Apart from the fact that he had a sword and was trying to kill some poor homeless man. "Why don't you just put the sword down and try to talk this through properly. Violence is not the answer."[/b] Lilith said, giving a him a stern look. Okay, the situation was not as normal as it could be. It was not often that Lilith asumed the role of Liath, but when someone was being threatened she didn't have any choice. The shields were remaining stable. We are going to get out of this. These two will sort out their differences and all will be well. Then they can both have a brighter future. Lilith thought, wondering if she needed to give the man behind her advice on where to get food. The strange attacker didn't look homeless, especially with a sword, but Lilith hoped she could give him a reason to not want to attack and kill the man behind her.[/div] tags: Open! Seconds.. moments.. breaths away from ending this nonsense and going home, just for someone to get in his way. The brutality of this situation was just going to get worse now, someone else got involved and things were going to get drawn out. That's all this hero had done.. some misguided sense of heroism had made all of this worse for everyone here. He hadn't seen her before and judging by her costume this certainly wasn't her usual profession. The contractor had to fight back a grin, even in this situation, at the heroines attire and mask. He had no time for that though, no time for human reactions, he had to sort this out quickly.
The first option was just to power through her shield, whatever it was. He hadn't seen something like this in.. ever. Still, he'd fought with super-natural beings before, of various species and powers and world, and he'd held his own. If nothing else, he had survived, which is more than a lot of people could have said in those situations. Sliding his shield slightly further back he gripped his sword with both hands and held it high above him. He didn't want to talk to her if he didn't have to.. words weren't something he liked to use on the job. Besides, he had dealt with this sort of person before. Someone willing to throw themselves between a man like him and his prey wasn't someone he would be able to talk down.
His mind suddenly found itself in conflict however, the situation was foreign to him. He had far too little information on her and her power to strike now. What if it wasn't just a shield in the same sense as his? What if it did something else.. what if striking at her provoked a more hostile response? What would he do then? For now.. he had the upper hand, he imagined, she was here to protect that man not to fight. He had no idea what she was willing to do to get out of this, but he was willing to kill. Lowering his sword he took a step back from the pair, providing some breathing room for everyone involved..
Sliding his shield back down his arm he stood properly before them, staring down at them from behind his mask. What was the plan.. how was he supposed to go about this? How could he get her to just give it up and leave? Taskmaster began tapping the tip of his sword on the ground in thought, this would be tough. "All will not be well." he replied coldly, continuing to tap the sword on the cold ground beneath them. "Violence is my job, ma'am, and I can't talk it out with someone when there isn't a problem. Ya see, my job tonight is to kill him, ain't nothing personal. All ya just managed to do is draw it out by interfering."
Tilting his head to the side, his hood draping differently over his mask as his head moved. What was her motivation here? Was it really something so cliched as disliking violence? What sane person saw a situation like this and really thought Taskmaster would talk it out? I mean really, look at him, he had a freakin' skull for a mask.. what part of his getup said 'I am willing to talk this out'. "I'm a godsend for this man, you just may not understand that, woman. This world isn't pretty, this is reality.. I don't want to hurt you, you're not part of the job. Just power down or whatever it is you do.. and walk away."

Her mother had been caught up in an attack by some super villian, but this attack seemed nothing like the one that her mother had suffered in. It was direct. But it wasn't the style of a super hero. What hero attacked an innocent homeless man who begged for his life? So why was this man standing here with a skull mask and sword with the intent to kill some poor unfortunate man who was just trying to live? The more she tried to think about it, the more confused Lilith got. But she would sort out this situation, no one would die. The man moved, the sword high above her now and Lilith checked her shield, making sure that there was no way that he would be able to get around it. But instead of striking, the stranger appeared to be thinking about the situation. That was good, not attacking was a good way to start and Lilith straightened somewhat, feeling slightly more encouraged that the situation was now under control, if only just. The sword was lowered and the man stepped back, giving them some space. Another good sign, hopefully everything would come to a peaceful conclusion without any death or injuries. But the masked stranger still had not spoken. "All will not be well." Well, that's a nice first thing to say. Lilith thought, sarcastically, although cheerful. "Violence is my job, ma'am, and I can't talk it out with someone when there isn't a problem. Ya see, my job tonight is to kill him, ain't nothing personal. All ya just managed to do is draw it out by interfering." Lilith listened carefully. "So you are an assasin." |
[/b] The university student decided. "Has this man here, done anything that means that he deserves death? He's just trying to live, you cannot begrudge a man his life. And there are plenty of other jobs that you could take. There is always an alternitive to violence."[/b] Lilith said peacefull, giving a friendly smile to both people. Watching the stranger, Lilith kept up her shields. It was not often that she appeared in the guise of Liath and it certainly wasn't easy. But she was an astrophysics student and was used to things being difficult. "I'm a godsend for this man, you just may not understand that, woman. This world isn't pretty, this is reality.. I don't want to hurt you, you're not part of the job. Just power down or whatever it is you do.. and walk away." Again the girl listened closely to his arguement. "You don't appear to be that bad,"[/b] She mused, as he said that he didn't want to hurt her. "But that doesn't stop killing being wrong."[/b] Lilith was trying to keep the situation peaceful and so far it appeared to be working. Shields still up, Lilith tried to puzzle out how to end this situation peacefully. "You know, I cannot walk away, not now. If I were to walk away then I would be no less guilty than you. The death would be on my hand as well."[/b] Lilith said, her face innocent, but stern. Maybe if she could not argue for the man's life, then she could try to convince him to stop to not hurt her. After all, he had said that he didn't want to hurt her. Still between the two men, Lilith was aware how vulnerable she might seem. A nineteen year old, with only a mask and a power ring stuck between a killer and a man who for some reason wanted to be killed. But there was hope for the situation and if she could look strong, then there would be no death and conflict avoided.[/div] tags: Open! This woman..
Her desire to cling to the imagined bright side of this situation was overbearing. An Assassin? That was accurate enough for tonight.. but didn't really involve the scope of his abilities. Still, bragging about how he was so much more than just an assassin didn't seem appropriate in this situation. "Has this man here, done anything that means that he deserves death? He's just trying to live, you cannot begrudge a man his life. And there are plenty of other jobs that you could take. There is always an alternative to violence."[/b] She didn't seem to fully grasp the scope of the situation here.. that was to be expected though. She had no idea who she was looking at, and didn't know what his presence here meant.
"Allow me to enlighten ya a bit here honey. Ya don't know who I am, and that's fine, but me being here is a warning.. a prelude. Like I told ya a bit ago, I'm a godsend for this man, hell.. this situation in general needs me. I'm here for him.. only him, so he's the only one that has to die.. get me?" The contractor began to pace back and forth in front of the homeless mans fire-bin. He wanted her to figure it out on her own, to reason out what he was trying to say. It was always better that way, to let someone come to the conclusion on their own. After all, if he told her out right she'd just deny it and argue with him longer. He didn't have time for that, didn't have time for her.. or this. This was supposed to be an easy job, a quick in and out sort of thing. After that he could bury it in the back of his mind and wait for his power to wipe it out for good.
All of that was just wishful thinking on his part though. Her next few lines crushed any hope Tony had of ending this rationally. It was a basic truth though, his logic and hers were two different realms entirely. "Don't appear to be that bad?" The skull-faced figure began to laugh, the jaw of his mask moving in tune with his own. Part of him was touched.. part of him wanted to believe her, that was a portion of himself he gave up the right to claim years ago though. "Honey.. I take money in exchange for peoples lives, I've done this for years. I assure ya, I am a very bad man." Hoisting his sword up over his shoulder the mercenary tightened his grip around it. This back and forth argument clearly beginning to wear on him. "Violence can be avoided? His blood on your hands? Listen.. sweetheart.." his words had begun to draw out, irritation evident in his tone "..Ya have to understand, I can turn and leave right now and he'll still die. I've got another week or so to try and finish this, and pending that I can't, the fucking gates open honey."
He made a grand gesture with his arms, sword and shield waved high into the air. Bring the sword back down to rest on his shoulder he returned his eyes to hers. The shield was the only thing between the two of them. He had to try.. it was his job after all. On top of that she didn't seem like the sort that would kill him even if she could. Heck, if she somehow made him bleed he imagined she'd cry herself to sleep over it. Tapping his foot in thought he mentally weighed the pros and cons of this potential fight but in the end only one thing mattered. He was a professional, and this was his job.
Without warning his hoisted the sword high above his head and brought it down hard on her shield. It had no effect. The recoil from impact was enough to send him back a step.. embarrassed by that he took the sword in both hands and swung again. A flurry of blows rained down on her shield, striking it from every angle he could manage in this cramped space. Each impact was met with the same reaction.. uselessness.. he was not getting past this shield. Frustration mounted as he began to realize this, a growl vocalizing with every failed attempt to break her guard. Finally he gave in, releasing a terrible yell and slamming his shield against the wall to vent his rage and humiliation.
Leaning against the opposite side of the alley he exhaled loudly, catching his breath now that his tantrum was over. "Why don't ya get it? I'm not the worst one out there.. there's lots more willing to do a much sloppier job to get it done, for much less money. I can't count the number of homeless I've seen while tracking down this one. Just this one guy has to die, ya can't fight it, ya can only make it worse. The others they'll send won't care.. they'll purge this whole damned city of homeless and call it good. Ya will see it on the news, but the cops won't care, and they won't get caught. That's the way the world works honey.. me being here is proof, my job is proof."
Pushing off the wall he rested the sword in front of him, tip on the ground, his hand on the pommel. His skeletal mask had found itself staring down at her from the other side of her shield once more. That was the way the world worked, he had seen it with his own eyes countless times. Burned into his memory was the fact of this world, the way things really worked, how the curtain of civilization hid the truth of it all away. It may have been a hard fact to grasp, but life did have a price.. and depending on the details, it was cheaper than a lot of people may have imagined. "Ya gotta decide right now sweetheart.. whether or not ya think ya can defend all the homeless in this city. Cause' if I leave this city without killing that man, if I leave without completing my job.. they'll send someone else to do it. I'm the first choice, professional, unnoticed and clean.. the second is messy and ruthless. Ya gonna have a lot more than just his blood on ya hands if I leave here without it. So tell me, what alternative do ya see now?"

Still, the student hoped for the best, no one would die tonight, or any other night because this stranger was payed to kill the homeless man she now protected. Remaining calm was a key thing when dealing with such a situation. Or difficult situations. Lilith had not really been trained to deal with these sorts of situations. The student looked back at the man behind her and gave him an encouraging smile. She hoped that this would be sorted out and then she would be able to help the man. "Allow me to enlighten ya a bit here honey. Ya don't know who I am, and that's fine, but me being here is a warning.. a prelude. Like I told ya a bit ago, I'm a godsend for this man, hell.. this situation in general needs me. I'm here for him.. only him, so he's the only one that has to die.. get me?" Lilith listened, the stranger did have a right to give his point of view and the student was curious, she studied science, it was her duty to be curious. As well as non-biased and Lilith supposed that she wasn't doing that too well. "This man has to die, you are paid to kill him, but you haven't said why?" |
[/b] The student questioned, wondering if the man behind her might be a spy. Not that that meant he should die. No one should die. Now the stranger with the skull mask was pacing and Lilith's eyes followed his movements. The girl remembered stories of wild animals pacing as they waited for their meal, but this did not deter her. Everything would be fine, there was always a peaceful solution. When she said he didn't appear that bad, Lilith noticed his laughter. "Don't appear to be that bad?" The Blue Lantern could understand why he might think himself to be bad, but that was a good sign in itself as well. "Honey.. I take money in exchange for peoples lives, I've done this for years. I assure ya, I am a very bad man.""However you said you don't wish to hurt me and you are aware that your actions are bad. It would be worse if you were willing to plow through me and thought that it was all in a good cause."[/b] Lilith said reasonably, hoping that her words would not lead to the stranger trying that. Lilith had never tried seeing how strong the shield was, it was based on her hope. Hopefully I'm hopeful. Lilith thought, more for the amusement of how that sounded. "Violence can be avoided? His blood on your hands? Listen.. sweetheart.." That was fair enough, he probably did have his own reasons, it would be worrying if he didn't. "..Ya have to understand, I can turn and leave right now and he'll still die. I've got another week or so to try and finish this, and pending that I can't, the fucking gates open honey." The girl frowned, first at the swear word and then as she tried to understand what exactly the stranger meant. Which gates? If she remembered correctly there were often gates to the afterlife. Did that mean the assasin would be killed if he didn't give kill the man behind her. Lilith didn't like that idea either. Couldn't both be saved? Movement brought her attention back to the actions that were currently going on. He was returning the sword to his shoulders. That was a good sign. There was silence for a moment, while Lilith waited for something to come to her head or for the stranger to talk. But then there was a sudden attack. Lilith's eyes flew open in shock and she seriously hoped that he wouldn't get through. The attacks were getting wild and if they did get through and strike the man behind her, then it might be a more painful death. The attacks were coming from everywhere and Lilith attempted to calm herself as she hoped for the best. Then the attacks stopped and the assasin didn't appear very happy that he hadn't gotten through. Lilith felt some pity for him as yelled and slammed his shield against the wall. In fact she felt like appologising, but there wasn't anything that she could really appologise for. That's the way the world works honey.. me being here is proof, my job is proof."Okay, this was difficult. Lilith frowned as she tried to consider a way out of this. If the homeless man was moved to some safe place and the other assasins became aware of it, that would protect them all, yes? But how would she go abou that? It would mean that the police would have to be aware and Lilith's mobile was in ber bag. Besides, it probably was complicated. But there was always a way to sort out a situations, there was always a better alternative. So tell me, what alternative do ya see now?"This was getting more complicated, but Lilith supposed that there must be a way. It would be useful if she did know about why the homeless man was being hunted by assasins. He had been rather silent. "If the police are aware they can keep him somewhere safe, then the other assasins would have no reason to kill all the homeless in the search for him."[/b] The student suggested, wondering if her lessons in science may help with deciding. She wasn't sure if it would be that helpful, though. This was about morals and ethics. Which in general was seen more in Biology and Chemistry.[/div] tags: Open!
