Personality: Balder is gentle and kind, qualities that stem from his position as the God of light, innocence, purity, and joy. He's passionate, forgiving, largely sensible, and calm. He doesn't brashly walk into danger, but his trusting nature can be manipulated.
He's fiercely loyal as well and respects authority, holding his father and Heimdall to great esteem. Balder is a rule-follower, sometimes too by-the-book in his ways, and does as he's told. This can be seen as a somewhat passive trait, but he's adamant when he feels he's right in a situation. Balder also possesses great empathy. He's not bitter about learning his true parentage and just accepted it readily. He is very concerned about Odin and the fate of Asgard, and will do anything to keep it safe.

History:
Balder was born to Odin and Frigga on a day when the alignment of the sun and moons cast a shadow upon Asgard. It was then prophesized that Balder's death would bring about Ragnorak, so Frigga cast a protective spell upon her son, making him invulnerable to all materials. Each of these materials pledged to bring him no harm, save the mistletoe, which was deemed too small and too unlikely to cause his death, so it was dismissed.
However, Odin further tampered with Balder's fate, and Balder grew without ever knowing his true parentage as a son of Odin. Odin still kept Balder near, and the boy grew to be as brothers with his other sons, including Thor and Loki. Amongst the Asgardians, Balder merited his own reputation in his own right as a warrior, but it was his gentle nature that made him loved. He was the Golden One, Balder the Brave, Balder the Beautiful, and even nature itself seemed to shine on him, the animals gathering about him as though they had been longtime friends.
During Thor's coronation (events of the first film), Balder was acting as diplomat to Asgard visiting the Queen of the Norns, Karnilla. Although he was quite taken by her, she he would not marry, having eyes for another, Nanna, who loved him. Balder learned Nanna was part of Karnilla's scheme to bring her to him, setting them up only to threaten Nanna's life if Balder would not be hers. Balder accepted Karnilla's terms to save Nanna, even pledging his service to the Queen, only for Nanna to kill herself to spare Balder a lifetime within Karnilla. Balder wept for Nanna, and returned to Asgard, where he learned of his true parentage.
Balder was charged by his father to look after Thor on Midgard, to keep the future king grounded on Asgard and not lose sight of his mission.

The men of the Great Hall banged their weapons on the table to a steady beat. A man who was not careful would their beard to the excitement, but they chanted along anyways, singing the song of a great voyage over a stormy sea.
In the next chorus Balder stood up proudly, Fandral and Volstagg in his arms, singing loudly the next verse of the song.
"Drink, for the wind blows cold and
Drink for The Wolf runs free.
Drink to the ships with sails like wings and
Drink to the storm-tossed seas."
Then they did a round, at the end of each lyric the man would swallow one entire pitcher of mead before their next line. It soon became a drinking game between the four of them, of who could sing and still swig their tankard before their next cue. Hogun retired graciously, long before any unrespectable behavior could happen, though his entire face was painted red by the time he lost. Fandral went next, sputtering out his mead and falling backwards onto Hogun.
The game left Balder and Volstagg, both far past remembering the exact words of the song and fulling intent on out-drinking the other.
"DRinK for the wiNd blows cOOld!" Volstagg beat down his empty tankard, earning a loud cry of cheers from his side of the table.
Balder gave a quick shake of his head and sang, his voice still largely untarnished by the alcohol, and entirely ignoring that Fandral had swaddled himself with his fur cloak under the table. "DRINK for the WOlfff runs freee!" he chanted back, and chugged down the tankard. Balder wiped his mouth with his free arm, his eyes fixed on the larger warrior.
Volstagg sang the next, then Balder. They each drank while the other sang, going into twelve more rounds of the song. Each of the men could barely stand, and had taken the game to a hurried pace of slurring out the most intelligible phrase before the other could try and finish.
The banging of the tankards grew faster and faster at each verse. Volstagg's beard practically drenched with mead and Balder's entire shirt clinging to his skin. He took it off, finding it limiting to movement.
The two of them stood on the table now, Volstagg with his dripping red beard, Balder shirtless and swaying. Soon enough no one knew what the words of the song were. At the last tankard, Balder the Blushing and Volstagg the Very-Intoxicated were shouting over the other before suddenly, the pair of them just fell backwards.
"Never had I known Lifeblood to be this many verses.." Fandral dreamily mumbled from his cozy fur bed (two maidens had joined him there as well, and Hogun, which he would discover that next morning).
"I'm through talking, get out of my cave,"
