Welcome
It all started when a crystal dropped into existence, punched a hole in time and space and landed into the lap of one the most insane men to ever walk the Earth.
At first, the clown didn't know what he had been gifted with, stuck in his cell in Arkham, staring at the reddish purple crystal laying innocently on the dirty stone floor.
And then the voices started, telling him of another universe, talking of power and chaos beyond what he could have ever dreamed.

"I'm sure you can cope." Kent said, floating back down to the ground and looking her in the eye. "You have courage. That's rare in a sin, especially Pride. As you are the sin that all sins come from, that makes you different. And if you feel that you cannot handle them on your own, I will assist you. As will Nabu. He knows how to recognise a good soul." The ceiling above them rippled, and a golden helmet floated through the wooden surface and rested at a position above Kent's head. "In fact, I think it is time he saw you for himself." And the helmet slid over Kent's head, obscuring his face from view.
A blinding light filled the entire room. It obscured everything it touched for a brief moment, and when it faded, there was an unfamiliar figure standing where Kent had stood moments ago. This was Nabu. No....this was Kent and Nabu combined. Doctor Fate stood before Raven. "Greetings Raven." Fate said. When he spoke, it was as if two people were speaking in unison. Kent's calm voice could be distinguished, as could the low rumble of Nabu. "We have heard you."

With what could happen, what had happened... there were so many triggers and Raven did not want to be what lurked inside her. The teenager fought with the Titans against those who threatened her home, but the darkness was inside her, under the light humanity that she strieved to keep. "I'm sure you can cope." True, Raven had been able to beat them when demonic and when herself, but she still didn't want to provoke her own coruption, nor did she want to kill one of them. Indigo eyes watched as Doctor Fate floated back down and looked at her. "You have courage. That's rare in a sin, especially Pride. As you are the sin that all sins come from, that makes you different. And if you feel that you cannot handle them on your own, I will assist you. As will Nabu. He knows how to recognise a good soul." "Thank you." [/b] Raven said. People often underestimated how much a nice comment could mean. To Raven it always meant a lot. Having been descriminated for being a demon, having lost herself to the darkness, not being able to fit in, it meant that any comments that accepted her seem special and fill her with happiness and relief. A ripple over head caught the Titan's attention and she glanced up to see a golden helmet which places itself on Doctor Fate's head. "In fact, I think it is time he saw you for himself." The blinding flash caught Raven by suprise and she quickly covered her eyes with her cloak, refraining from retreating into her soul-self to escape the brightness. Then it fadded and she lowered her cloak and looked at the unfamiliar figure. "Greetings Raven." It sounded like two voices, Raven could recognise the voice of Doctor Fate. So the other deeper voice had to be Nabu, then. Was it some form of posession? Raven guessed that Doctor Fate let Nabu go into his mind. It was nothing like the evil that lurked inside her, that was one side of her, darker. This appeared to be two people, one body and a helmet. "We have heard you." The 'we' confirmed it. Two voices, one body. It certainly was fascinating. "Pleasure to meet you. Am I right in believing that you are Nabu?"[/b] Raven said politely, wondering what exactly was going through Doctor Fate's head, whether there was the two of them or just Nabu.[/blockquote][/div] [/style]

"You are both correct and incorrect, daughter of Trigon." Fate said. "We are Doctor Fate. We are Nabu and Kent Nelson combined. Together we are the supreme being." A light glow encompassed the eyes of the helmet as he spoke. "Kent Nelson provides a host for Nabu's essence. Out of that union, Doctor Fate is created." As he said this, the glow faded, revealing Kent's eyes had been tinted yellow. "We are not in a position to judge your request for help, daughter of Trigon. Instead, we must determine whether you are worthy." He opened his palm, and a pair of glistening golden scales appeared in his hand.
"Behold the scales of fate. Sins are measured against good deeds to determine worthiness. Only these of the demonic blood are subject to its judgements. Let us see." The scales began to move, quickly, to the left. "Your sins are great, daughter of Trigon." Fate commented. As he spoke, the scales began to level a little. "And yet, you are a Titan. A champion of the people of the mortal plane, and above all else...." the scales had levelled completely, and then, they slowly tipped to the right. "...you seek redemption." Fate finished as he dispelled the scales. "It is decided. You are worthy of our help."

"You are both correct and incorrect, daughter of Trigon." That was not the name that Raven prefered, 'daughter of Trigon', it reminded her of the heritage that she held, of the evil within her. But then again, this situation was due to the fact that she was half demon, she would have to get used to it. "We are Doctor Fate. We are Nabu and Kent Nelson combined. Together we are the supreme being." That certainly made sense and Raven nodded. So at least she understood a bit more about this.
"Kent Nelson provides a host for Nabu's essence. Out of that union, Doctor Fate is created." In that case, Raven guessed she should think of the man she was talking to as Kent, or Mr Nelson while this union of two minds was Doctor Fate. It was amazing how they worked together, she wondered if he had ever had to be in a combat situation. The bond then would have to be quite strong because it was thinking fast and needed teamwork that could be hard enough when in different bodies. The helmet that had previously been glowing settled down and the Titan could see Doctor Fate's, or rather Mr Nelson's eyes.
"We are not in a position to judge your request for help, daughter of Trigon. Instead, we must determine whether you are worthy." Raven looked at the scales that appeared and was reminded by the scales the Egyptians had in the afterlife, balencing their souls against a feather, if she remembered correctly. Then the bad souls were fed to a lion, crocodile, hippopotaus creature, Ammit the devourer. "Behold the scales of fate. Sins are measured against good deeds to determine worthiness. Only these of the demonic blood are subject to its judgements. Let us see." So it wasn't the Scales of Justice, but Raven felt rather doomed. The teenager didn't believe that her good deeds outweighed the evil that lived within her. She wished Gar was here, he often made her feel better.
The scales moved dramatically to the left. "Your sins are great, daughter of Trigon." I'm damned. Raven thought emotionlessly as she observed this. The Titan knew that she was the original sin, she'd stolen her brothers powers and tried to put them into the Titans and nearly killed Gar. Then she had planned to rule earth. The Titan was pretty certain that there could not be enough good in her to outweight the evil and sins within her. But then the scales began to level and Raven's indigo eyes widened. "And yet, you are a Titan. A champion of the people of the mortal plane, and above all else...." The scales had began to level, and then tip to the right. The teenager couldn't believe it.
"...you seek redemption." Who would have ever thought that seeking redemption could really tip the scales. For a second, Raven wondered if her sins had won out whether she would have been fed to some creature. "It is decided. You are worthy of our help." "Thank you." Raven said, feeling slightly more at ease now. The whole process had been rather worrying for the Titan, especially as she focused on her negatives more than her positives. "So, I'm guessing you know the reason why I am seeking help?" Raven checked. She had no idea how much Mr Nelson would remember, how joined he was to Nabu and various other factors that meant that the Titan could not figure out whether Doctor Fate remembered the problem she had spoken to Mr Nelson about.

"Kent Nelson's knowledge is out knowledge as well." the entity said cryptically. "You seek to perform the shrouding ritual. A tricky request. To hide a spawn from its creator. Success is not guaranteed, even from Nabu's power." Fate said this with a heavy heart. Now that judgement had passed, he genuinely wanted to help Raven out. It seemed to be a more difficult affair than any previous requests. Still, there was nothing wrong with attempting the spell. If it didn't work, it didn't work. Simple as that.
"To perform this ritual for one such as yourself, daughter of Trigon, would take incredible amounts of magic. Perhaps even a link to the etherial plane itself." Fate said, his voices low with discontent. "And even then, there would be no telling if the spell works or not. It is...tricky. Almost fear inspiring." No. he would not let fear get the better of him. Not now. This was the time to be resolute. The time to be brave. When it is over, then he can fear for his life. But for now, patience, calm. "The one who seeks to be the subject of the spell must collect the demon heart themselves. This is a very old ritual."

So then he did know why she was here. The girl hoped that Doctor Fate would know a way without having to kill one of her half-brothers. Raven shivered at the very thought of having to kill. "You seek to perform the shrouding ritual. A tricky request. To hide a spawn from its creator. Success is not guaranteed, even from Nabu's power." That was not too suprising, when Trigon was only one tenth of his power, it was enough to destroy the the universe that Raven lived in. Trying to outwit him would never be the easiest of tasks.
Raven could tell that Doctor Fate wanted to help her, she could feel the emotions around her, it was like being able to tell the temperature around her. "To perform this ritual for one such as yourself, daughter of Trigon, would take incredible amounts of magic. Perhaps even a link to the etherial plane itself." The Titan shivered, she had been used as a portal before and knew of the etherial plane. The girl was able to teleport between dimensions as well. "And even then, there would be no telling if the spell works or not. It is...tricky. Almost fear inspiring." "I can try to help. I have magic within me." [/b] Raven said softly. "The one who seeks to be the subject of the spell must collect the demon heart themselves. This is a very old ritual." Worry and fear filled Raven's heart as this was brought up. "I can't face them. When around my family I go demonic. I can't take someone's heart, I can't kill!"[/b] Raven protested. That was what her demonic family did, Raven would rather follow her humanity and live free of murder and guilt. "My father murders, my brothers murder. I don't want to be like them."[/b] The teenager said. [/blockquote][/div] [/style]

"Your work ethics are admirable." Fate consented. Even for a demon, Raven knew what was right and what was wrong. "However, they are of demonic origin. You are not commiting an act of murder. You are commiting an act of mercy." It was true. The demons were usually tortured souls. The ones made by Trigon were, on the other hand, different. Soulless. "They are the secondary spawn of Trigon. They do not possess a living soul. And it is difficult to destroy that which does not have a soul to call its own." The Lords of Order had tried to find a way to permanently destroy Trigon's sons, but they had failed. Every bit of light magic they had held no effect on a soulless demon. The human side of Fate noted that he had just called, to an extent, Raven herself, soulless. Even when she wasn't.
"You, on the other hand, are different." he observed. "You have a soul." The auras of those with a soul was very different from one without a soul. As a matter of fact, those with no soul had no aura, from Fate's view at least. His guess was that Raven was some kind of experiment. Breed a half-demon and find that she has a soul. Fate could see the appeal to Trigon. The soul would be irreversibly tainted for as long as the being lived.

Raven looked down, that was not the way that she would look at it. The Titan didn't kill because it was not the way of the Titans and it went against her father. The monks had also taught her to be calm and controlled. Killing was not calm, nor was it controlled. "However, they are of demonic origin. You are not commiting an act of murder. You are commiting an act of mercy." Raven blinked, they were her half brothers and had human mothers, just like she did. "Would it be more merciful to kill me?" [/b] Raven asked softly. With her, it would not be against her will, although the Titan would prefer to live. But taking a life, especially against his or her own will, was worse. Besides, she had been pretty mean to them when in demonic form. After all she had hit them with lightning, tried to steal their power and then just left them in the desert. To be fair, she wasn't completely sure how alive they might be. "They are the secondary spawn of Trigon. They do not possess a living soul. And it is difficult to destroy that which does not have a soul to call its own.""Difficult,"[/b] Raven said, slight worry and fear in her voice. "Are you sure?"[/b] When she had gone demonic and gone out of her adapting to the body, Raven had easily knocked them out with a single spell. Am I more powerful than I know, or is it because I am the sin that they come from? Raven wondered. On top of that, she was aware that Doctor Fate had just said that she had no soul. It didn't bother Raven too much, though. She used her soul-self a lot. Teleporting, containing people, attacking, defense, meditating. So did that mean that her half-brothers had souls that Doctor Fate was unaware of? "You, on the other hand, are different." Well, he was aware that Raven had one. "You have a soul." Raven nodded. "I have power with it. I can attack, defend, teleport. I can even take people within it and if I want, show them their nightmares. My soul is rather a dark place."[/b] Raven's tone took on a hint of sadness. Other people's souls were a ball of bright light in the darkness. Raven had a cold dark place like space, complete with asteroids. [/blockquote][/div] [/style]

"Very difficult." Fate agreed. "A human soul is one of the most powerful magics in the physical plane. It cannot be truly destroyed. It can be tortured, perverted beyond belief, but it cannot die. It is one of the reasons why Nabu must bind himself to a human host. A battle helmet has no room for a soul to inhabit." As he heard Raven list off what she could do with her soul, he checked what she was describing against his own knowledge. It certainly seemed familiar to what Nabu had witnessed before. To be able to do that with one's soul was a power exclusive to a select group of people.
In the days when Nabu was still alive, there were ceremonies performed among the blood priests of old to create hosts for the demons they worshipped. Those children had great magical power, but a short lifetime. When the energy of their demonic father entered the physical plane, the host died. They had to be half-demon. And above all, it was absolutely necessary for them to have a human soul in order to channel that amount of raw dark energy. But those kind of magical acts had not been commited for over 900 years. If Trigon had somehow performed this magic again, it could only mean one thing. He intended to use Raven as a conduit for his great power.

"Very difficult." The Titan noticed how Doctor Fate had not replied to her words about killing her being easier. She wondered if it had slipped his mind or whether the man, or men, didn't want to consider that option, but Raven still thought that she would prefer to take that option. The teenager did not want to kill. It would be easier for her. She didn't want any more blood on her hands. Indigo eyes looked sadly at the ground as she contemplated both options.
"A human soul is one of the most powerful magics in the physical plane. It cannot be truly destroyed. It can be tortured, perverted beyond belief, but it cannot die. It is one of the reasons why Nabu must bind himself to a human host. A battle helmet has no room for a soul to inhabit." Raven listened, feeling slightly worried as he spoke about how a human soul could be tortured. It worried her that, as well as knowing some more about Nabu and the helmet. The more she knew, the more Pride would know if Raven lost control. Still, Raven did not want to face her brothers.
As they sat in silence, Raven felt the emotional atmosphere around her. Was there worry other than her own. "Do you have any idea if there is something I can do that doesn't involve killing or going near my half-brothers?" [/b] Raven asked, after a pause, wondering what knowledge Doctor Fate had of the future and what the Titan would face. Family outings were not something that Raven wanted to go through, nor did she want to change her morals. Raven looked up, her indigo eyes hopeful as she waited to see if Doctor Fate would offer her a safe alternative.[/blockquote][/div] [/style]

"Do you have any idea if there is something I can do that doesn't involve killing or going near my half-brothers?" The question reverberated in the doctor's head for a time. He didn't want anything bad to happen to the girl. She had a good heart for a demonic spawn of Trigon, the most hated demon in all the known magical realms. He couldn't help but feel sorry for her. It went against all he stood for, but this demonic individual stirred up feelings of sympathy in him. Still, if he was going to help her, he had a bit of work to do on his part.
"I'm afraid there is not." Fate said simply. Nabu's knowledge of the magic involved in cloaking one from a demon was great, and there was no other conclusion. Raven would have to complete the ritual the same way that other magicians before her had done. "The ritual is very specific on what must be done. I am afraid that you must kill one of your half-brothers. Do not fear, though, for I will be with you when you perform the act." He would be sure to enact a ward against the demons, should they choose to return to the physical plane and wreak even more havoc than they had already created. Not only that, he did not want to see Raven die, or worse, give in to the influence of Trigon. That would not do at all.

Raven remained silent as well, although her mind was rushing through thoughts. What if she had to kill her brothers? Would she be able to cope so near their influence? If her father was rising surely her brothers would be helping, would they be expecting this? Or would her father have given them more power? Don't panic, there will be another way. Don't let your emotions control you. Calm. Raven thought to herself, strictly, attempting to not let Doctor Fate see the inner turmoil within her. She didn't think that her feeling emotions would be of any help.
The Titan could tell that Doctor Fate felt sympathy for her, but the teenager was more aware of the growing desperation within her. She needed the answer she wanted to hear. "I'm afraid there is not." "No..." [/b] Raven breathed, unwittingly she had hung all her hopes on getting an alternative answer. Despair flooded into her and her indigo eyes pricked with tears that threatened to break free. Control. Raven thought, trying to focus on what else Doctor Fate had to say. "The ritual is very specific on what must be done. I am afraid that you must kill one of your half-brothers. Do not fear, though, for I will be with you when you perform the act." Raven stared at Doctor Fate as she spoke. The act? The ACT! It was murder! Yes her brothers were not nice but that didn't make to fine for her to kill one just to hide from her father's influence and for Doctor Fate to speak about it so coldly... "It's not an act! It's murder and that's wrong!"[/b] Raven said, her voice raising as tears splashed against her cheek. Panic was rising inside of her. "Please! I can't face them, Trigon will claim me! I don't want to be his daughter!"[/b] She protested falling to her knees and clutching her sides in despair. "I'm already loosing, I am as evil as they are. What makes it okay for them to die for me?" All thought of control had vanished from Raven's mind and it was dark, full of despair and grief. It was possible that amoung the toil of emotions that the Titan felt there was also betrayal. When one kept emotions under lock and key it meant that when they did get free it could over powering and full of feelings. With that, Raven's powers reacted as she collapsed on the floor from the pressing emotions, tears still flowing. From the half-demon came her soul-self, a giant black raven. The soul-self that Trigon had baptised, the darker side of Raven which she usually had under control. Usually her soul-self was benign but with her emotions out of control, who could tell. The form raised its wings as it shadowed Raven's body, rising above her form, raising its head to utter a silent call, the teenager unaware that her power had manifested itself.[/blockquote][/div] [/style]

"You must control your emotions! They are the key to your power, but if you let them consume you, Trigon has already won." Fate bent one knee and knelt beside Raven. "You must fight with all your strength. You mu..." he stopped. A pale green orb on the table had begun pulsing with a green light and making a loud, high-pitched whistling sound. This was Fate's Evil Indicator. A powerful dark magic had permeated the walls of Fate's Tower. Fate could even see it. Raven's soul self. The dark bird from which she took her name. An evil presence if ever there was one. As it rose above her, Fate stood up fully and levitated slightly into the air, eyes practically shadowed by the golden glow coming from behind the helmet. A presence of such evil could only be defeated by an equal amount of good magic. And Fate had more than enough to counter it.
"Nabu, Lord of Order, commands you! Begone from this realm!" Fate's voice was magically magnified to a nearly deafening level. It seemed to be the only way to make contact with such a being. At the same time, he held up a gloved hand and pushed the palm outwards, revealing a glowing ankh shape. In front of Raven's soul self, a much bigger ankh appeared, hovering in the air. This spell was designed for soul containment. With any luck, the soul self would be sealed back in the soul from whence it came, with no damage to the soul.

They caused people to act impulsivly, to hurt others and in some cases it caused some to go demonic. Raven was a battlefield; a constant war to keep the emotions at bay, an eternal struggle that she slowly was loosing. "You must control your emotions! They are the key to your power, but if you let them consume you, Trigon has already won." "I'm trying..." |
[/b] Raven breathed. It was as Doctor Fate had knelt besides her, the teenager had realised that she needed to win the battle within her mind. "You must fight with all your strength. You mu..."Words seemed faint, lost in the onslaught of emotions. Why was the only way to delay her father with murder? Why did she have the right to live and not them. I am more evil than they are. The teenager thought, mournfully - tears still spilling from her eyes. Emotions were an icy blade slowly slipping between the ribs. It was then that Raven realised that Doctor Fate hadn't finished talking and had a trailed off. And there was light. "Nabu, Lord of Order, commands you! Begone from this realm!" The words were defeaning and the Titan covered hear ears. What had happened? She had released her soul-self. Indigo eyes flickered up to the dark raven that loomed over her. It was terrifying to see that her soul had manifested without her realising. And the light hurt, it was bright and Raven knew that her darker side did not like it. "You must fight with all your strength." Her mind was turmoil, how could she fight the emotions? They were justified! Was she being attacked or was she attacking? In the swarm of emotions and light she could not tell. Confusion filled her mind, she wanted to fight back against the light, her soul was trying. But Raven wanted to bring it back, to get her emotions under control. The teenager was trying to bring her soul-self to stop fighting the light that was attacking. "Maybe you should just kill me."[/b] Raven whispered. It would be better than having to face the future.[/style] tags:Doctor Fate word count: 348 muse: Withing Temptation notes: Loved your post! "I will not kill you, Pride. Not while there is a chance to save you yet." Fate had forseen this. Her soul-self came from Trigon. It despised the light, and everything associated with it, even good magic. Yet it was putting up a good fight, even if it wasn't on par with the Lord of Order. Fate was forced to use more of his power than he usually would. This concentration of power made Fate's eyes glow even more, and the glowing ankh on the palm of his hand light up even more. In Fate's helmet, a reflection appeared. A reflection of something that was not there. Swirling stars, a bright galaxy, and an endless reach of space.
Several of the ornaments around Fate's living room seemed to have activated. Many flashed bright colours or emitted loud noises. One even puffed out a jet of smoke. All of Fate's magical devices had activated soon enough, and the room was full of a cacophony of noise, lights and, in some cases, smells. They didn't really bother Fate all that much. His focus was on getting Raven's soul-self to submit to his banishing charm. If worst came to worst, he would put a ward around it.
