Welcome
It all started when a crystal dropped into existence, punched a hole in time and space and landed into the lap of one the most insane men to ever walk the Earth.
At first, the clown didn't know what he had been gifted with, stuck in his cell in Arkham, staring at the reddish purple crystal laying innocently on the dirty stone floor.
And then the voices started, telling him of another universe, talking of power and chaos beyond what he could have ever dreamed.

it's always do this, do that * everything they want to * Michael took a deep breath, trying to clear his mind and listen to the grinding noise of the lift as it descended from his floor, carrying its lone occupant. He had had some mental in fighting about bringing his motorbike but had finally decided it wouldn't work for this instance. This was a trial run, a test to see if anyone, including himself, was ready for the kind of hero he would be providing. Draven thought the idea was brilliant, Ellie thought he was mental, but really mattered was what his dad thought. Donovan hadnt been to keen that his son had waited till he had left the country before telling them, but his worry was one that still vibrate threw his mind "could you kill if that is what it takes?"
The very thought sent him reeling, his eyes looking down at the Kevlar reinforced Guy Fawkes mask that sat ontop of the black bundle in his arms. Michael had made all the precautions, bullet proof vest, constant night time training sessions to hone his shadow abilities. Even the renewal of his close combat weapons courses. Yet actually ending the life of another? His hand gripped the martyrs cross for a moment before the lift shuttered to a stop and the cage lifted. If God had not intended all this He would not have given him the gifts and the drive....but killing?
Another deep breath of calming escaped his lips as he began to pull his gear on. Black shirt over Kevlar vest, black slacks tucked into combat boots. A belt adorned with six throwing knives and two short swords. Finally the mask with a wig attached and a hat and cloak for drama. No one would see THIS coming. He hoped that was a good thing. Now what was next.....o yes, where to go? He had scouted a couple places out in the days following his arrival to the states, including rooftops, dark areas between buildings in the popular districts, and even that school his father had told him about. That might be his last stop for the night....but what about the first? After a moment or two a picture of a dark rooftop on 5th avenue came into his minds eye. He remembered a garden, some clothes on dryer lines, toys, it had been like someones version of an oasis in the heat of the city. It wasn't a bad place to start, it was even high enough to see streets farther then the ones it bordered. That settled it, he kept the mental picture open and moved toward a shadowy doorway next to the lift. It wouldn't take long to get there, though by foot it had to have been at least a 3 hour walk. Moving into the shadows Michael felt the tendrils of darkness take hold of him, stick to his skin and begin to separate him from the world where light touched it.
Soon he could feel himself walking threw what felt like sludge, cling to his body and making him feel as if he were moving in slow motion. The world of shadows was hazy and heavy, though if he tried you could see passages back to the world of light, and apparently New York had many. It took Michael to find the one that was pictured in his thoughts, but when he did he walked into it like nothing was wrong. Moving from heavy darkness to the wide open and fresh air of a New York roof top at night. tagged. text here words. 595 notes. Although it made her uncomfortable that she was so at home in the darkness. Still, as a hero it was her duty to protect people, no matter what the time of day was. Besides, she had advantages over the other heroes in the night. There was a benefit to moving at night, with so many people asleep there were less emotions and so there was less strain on the empath. Silently, Raven floated above the ground, feelings the emotions of people as some began to fall into sleep. But she was not here to wait and feel the emotions of the city, she was here to protect them.
Indigo eyes flickered open and this time looked at the physical world that was mainly shrouded in the darkness of night. In the cool night breeze her cloak and dress slightly billowed out and slowly the teenager super hero lowered herself to the ground, until her feet touched the floor. So far she had not felt any emotion that showed any sign of her being needed. Then again she couldn't concentrate as well as she used to. But there was something she could definitely tell was happening. A new being had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Teleportation, not something that the teenager was unfamilar with.
So, Raven teleported herself, slipping into her soul-self, then out at the location where the fresh emotions had appeared. She was hooded and dark herself. The Titan took in the location, she was on a roof and there was a man with what appeared to be knives and even swords. Not the kind of thing one often saw and Raven wondered why he had them; after all, they were deadly weapons. She couldn't see his face, though. No hostile emotions that she was aware of. Looking for a victim or someone to protect? Silently the teen lifted herself from the roof and flew forward a few paces until she was closer to the person. Raven didn't often start conversation, but this time there was no team that she would support. It was just her.
Mentally preparing herself, Raven decided to announce her presence. "Interesting weapons and sudden apperance. I must ask, what is it that you plan to do?" [/b] The teenager said, her tone emotionless. The preperations that Raven had taken meant that if he did decide to attack her, or she had shocked him, that she would be able to raise her soul-self as a shield, hopefully in time. Even then, she did have rapid healing. All in all, the teenager was not worried, even if she could feel worry.[/blockquote][/div] [/style]

it's always do this, do that * everything they want to * Michael looked around the roof, taking in the scenery he had so well pictured in his mind, though this time it was bathed in the lights of the city. So many shadows seemed to pull from different objects, they seemed to beckon him closer, asking him sweetly that he may return to they’re warm sticky embrace. He knew better though, he was only to focus on them when he needed them, the world that he traveled through always seemed to be alive, as if each shadow was a tendril of its power, a spy amongst the light. Though he wore black he represented the light that was his precedence this night, was to show that he represented good amongst the darkness. With these thoughts he looked away from the shadows around him and started moving towards the edge of the building, yet before he could go very far something caught him, a voice from behind him that he hadn’t been expecting.
Quick movements and fingers moving to his throwing knives were his reaction as he turned towards the intruder, yet as he looked slight recognition touched his mind. This one was a hero that he had heard of…what had her name been? Something to do with a bird right? Either way she was a hero and the fact his hands were ready to grab one of his throwing knives probably didn’t give a good look at his situation, so instead of dying his first night out Michael let his hand lift from them and his head tilt to the side. She had asked what he had planned to do? Did he even know? Better yet, how did he talk to someone in a situation where he was masked? He knew that all she could see was his Guy Fawkes mask and not his face, yet something told him that even his voice could give him away. So instead of speak as usual he let out a audible whisper, this would be how he talked for the rest of his heroic career. “I only come to see the city. I do not wish to intrude on anything that I do not belong unless someone such as yourself does such a villainess act that I must.” From those words on Michael moved in a circle around her, not threatening but observing, he kept his eyes on hers, though he knew all she could see were empty eyes, free of emotion except for the smile that was perpetrated on his mask.
“May I enquire of the name of the one who asks such a question?”

After all, he had reached for his knives and Raven started to raise a shield. But it turned out it was not needed. There was a change of emotions and everything settled down. The teenager almost frowned as she felt recognition in the stranger - Raven didn't recognise him, although the mask might give reason to that. Underneath the mask was there someone that she knew? Scanning her brain, Raven tried to think of any teleporters that she knew, male ones, especially if they had a link to knives. Nothing came up.
Maybe he had seen her in the news or something. “I only come to see the city. I do not wish to intrude on anything that I do not belong unless someone such as yourself does such a villainess act that I must.” Raven regarded the words for a few seconds, with her worry of loosing herself to her demonic side she did find the idea of someone who would act if she turned... appealing. Although she doubted that the mortal weapons would be of much use. That is fine. I did not mean to interupt." [/b] Unless this stranger was very good at lying, his emotions suggested that he was telling the truth. The teenager could tell that he was changing his voice, no one ever normally spoke in whispers. Of course, not all super heroes changed their voice - Raven just happened to be one of those ones. “May I enquire of the name of the one who asks such a question?” The Titan nodded, it made sense and it also meant that she could have a name to go with his face. Mask. "Raven. It's nice to meet you. Can I know your name as well?"[/b] Raven asked politely, although there was no emotion on her face. It had less emotion than the mask that he wore.[/blockquote][/div] [/style]

it's always do this, do that * everything they want to * Michael stopped and tilted his head again, this time to the left and thought for a moment. A name? He hadn’t even considered. Maybe he had thought he would have a named taped to him eventually, no one had actually ever asked him…not even his family when he had told them the plan. What could he be considered, what sounded like it would work? Something mysterious, something dark that would work with what he now wore. What had his dad named his childhood monster in the closet? It was Latin; something he had thought sounded really cool at first and even helped him not be afraid anymore.
“If a name could be placed on me it would be something that would not fit my purpose. I am of light but darkness is where I live. I cannot see light unless it is among the night. Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge. So if I must be named it shall be Umbra” Where the heck had all that come from? Was he speaking out of his ars at this point? Where ever he had pulled that mass of wording from, other than the bible verse, he started to realize that he was going to either sound like a moron or confuse the heck out of Raven. Not only that but if he kept speaking in riddles no one would really take him seriously.
After a pause he continued in a apologetic sort of way “I do not wish to confuse, if I am I apologize. Umbra is a name that I have given myself because of the shadows I come and of the shadows I leave. Though I consider myself a light among the darkness in which I live.”

'Raven' was the Titan's birth name; while 'Rachel Roth' was the identity which she had taken up. He did look thoughtful and eventually he did speak. So if I must be named it shall be Umbra”
That was an interesting way to decide and Raven noted how this Umbra (Latin for shadows, or maybe even connected to the mythology where umbra meant shades of the dead) appeared to be the opposite of her. She was the darkness although she tried to live in the light, she was the daughter of a demon and her prayers would never be heard by anyone good. They say opposites attract but Raven wondered if it would turn out to be cataclysmic in this case. So the teenager decided to hold her tounge: it would do no good to speak of it. “I do not wish to confuse, if I am I apologize. Umbra is a name that I have given myself because of the shadows I come and of the shadows I leave. Though I consider myself a light among the darkness in which I live.”
Raven nodded to show that she understood. The emotionless empath had not been too confused. She suspected that this Umbra was either religious or his powers came from God. "An interesting name and I do not mind your introduction. It was... insightful." [/b] She replied. And it had been a grand introduction when compared to hers. For a brief few seconds, Raven wondered whether Umbra could sense the darkness within her, or the little light that was her humanity. "I guess that you are new to this sort of business. And to the city. If you want, I can show you a few things. Important sites or if your prefer, areas of higher crime."[/b] The Titan suggested. She was interested in seeing how Umbra would cope with criminals. Besides, it would be a good idea to see if he planned to use the weapons as murder tools or just ways to stop the criminal and to turn them over to the judged.[/blockquote][/div] [/style]

Michael hadn’t noticed the change in emotion, hadn’t even realized that he might have said something that caused any kind of change in the situation but when he saw her look down at her feet and then back at him he stopped. She then told him something that, though her voice and face were emotionless, seemed to present that she was self-conscious about such a thing. He was actually slightly shocked, not by her pronouncement but by that idea that he had presented something to an experienced hero that they were worried about him caring about. “Dear Raven, might I say that all of those on this planet are just that. Do not all live in darkness and pursue light? Yes, you may be this in a more literal sense but does not still mean it is possible?” He walked closer to her, leaving the shadows and tilting his head to the side. There was something that both of them had in common at that moment. Michael showed his emotions but he wore a mask so they could not be shown, while Raven seemed to hold hers back, or even eclipse them completely. So for him he tilted his head in confusion, approaching her slowly and using his hands to express other emotions. “Even if you are of darkness does that not mean you have to be darkness? Would your heart be hardened by something you can control? Or are you afraid that you were born with such an issue as this?” She had confused him, what was someone who seemed immortal and awe inspiring to other people, hide behind her emotionless domineer? tagged. text here words. 277 notes. I however I cannot fly so unless you wish to fallow me thru shadow I do not see how we will get there.” That was interesting, Raven's own powers were sometimes mistake for shadows. To be fair, her soul was a dark place. "I can teleport more than one with my soul-self. But I doubt it will be any lighter than the shadows. However I do know where I'm going and could get there instantaneously." |
[/b] Raven suggested, wondering if her soul-self might show her darkness. It was certainly not Light Magic. But Umbra had spoken of shadows, so maybe it was not something that he would mind. Even as Umbra walked, Raven remained still and in her place. She would not take the offered hand until a decision had been reached. Her method of transport didn't involve physical contact. Only a short distance between the two. “As for me being new I must admit that I am both new to this life as well as the city, but I wish to prove myself in both. A trial run tonight was supposed to be to see if I could deal with the situations that would come from such a life. Meeting you was a lovely gift that has come to speed along the prossess.”"A good idea. It is best to give things a trial before leaping in."[/b] Raven said, although she doubted that if he knew what she was he would decide that she was 'a lovely gift'. She felt slightly bad not telling Umbra, with his kind words. The emotions didn't show on her face, the emotions were barely there, others would not have noticed such a small emotion, but it seemed large and important to Raven. She looked down at her feet, wondering if there was any way she could say it carefully without possible offending Umbra. "I wouldn't say that I'm 'a lovely gift'. I suppose it is only right to let you know that I am... more of the darkness that is trying to live in the light."[/b] She said, her voice softer now, although it still had no emotion. Now the teenager was more aware of the gap between them and she waited to see how Umbra would respond. She had spoken with a part truth and now she was to be judged. If Umbra guessed her heritage she expected no more than to be not trusted. Raven wouldn't trust herself, despite her annoyance that some never trusted her because they could not see past the demon inside her. But emotions were dangerous and she pushed them aside, indigo eyes watching Umbra, as emotionless as the mask. “Dear Raven, might I say that all of those on this planet are just that. Do not all live in darkness and pursue light? Yes, you may be this in a more literal sense but does not still mean it is possible?”
The teenager's eyes did not leave Umbra as he moved closer. Raven knew about the darkness of emotions that seemed to weigh the humans down, but that was just it. Their humanity was a light, especially when compared to the darkness that lingered in her. "The others have more light. They become weighed down by negative emotions but it is only a shadow." |
[/b] Raven said, not willing to talk about her heritage. The softness in her voice had disappeared as Raven felt a tiny shift in her emotions to self-hatred. It was minute but worrying. At least it wasn't as bad as some emotional swings she had had in the past weeks. He was still approaching, slowly. Raven felt his emotions; confused. Why? What had she said that would confuse him? “Even if you are of darkness does that not mean you have to be darkness? Would your heart be hardened by something you can control? Or are you afraid that you were born with such an issue as this?” The teenager knew she was dark, she knew that she was the embodiment of pride. "I try to not be darkness but I cannot escape it. I have a heritage that is only light on my mothers side. But you are confused. What is it that I have said that you do not understand?"[/b] The Titan was as curious as someone who was meant to forsake emotions could be. “You seem to think you are and darkened spirit, something that can only imitate light and good. Silence me if you wish or if I speak falsely but you are not such a thing. You are not what came before or what has happened in the past. You are that of today and now. Sweet Raven, do not cut yourself to less then you are, for I do not see darkness in your eyes. You hide emotion but as you say, you are still atleast part human are you not?” Michael spoke with concern in his words now, was it that he was shocked at her weakness being one that was inner? Or was it more that, though she was a hero that she was still a person and he had always been taught to care for others no matter what? Either way he still moved toward her until he was only feet away. He did not believe in coincidences, and the moment before him was exactly why. “May I surmise that tonight did not happen by accident? I do not believe in the occurrence of accidents when it comes to events that change the course. Such as this, I came out tonight to see how I might change the world, instead I ended up in the company of a very attractive woman who seems to believe she can only imitate what she desires.” Michael shook his head and offered his hand to her. “Allow me to take you somewhere, I wish to show you that what you believe is not only wrong but is what might hold you back from healing from whatever wound is holding you in its grasps of pain”tagged. text here words. 277 notes. Solstice has shone bright and hurt Raven. Umbra did not shine like that, yet he seemed to share some of the same views as Solstice. The not worrying about the darkness and not wanting Raven to withdraw into herself. “You seem to think you are and darkened spirit, something that can only imitate light and good. Silence me if you wish or if I speak falsely but you are not such a thing. You are not what came before or what has happened in the past. You are that of today and now. "Do you want me to tell you the truth?" |
[/b] Raven said, her voice almost shaking. Not many knew how hard it was to admit that your were damned, that you were a demon, that you were a sin. "My humanity seems like it can be beaten by the evil and is only a mask that I use. I cannot be trust."[/b] Raven said, her voice now sounding colder, like a winter's breeze over the powdered snow. She could feel his concern. But why should anyone be concerned for me. Raven thought, her mind taking on a bitter tone. She didn't think she deserved it. Umbra was now a feet away. “May I surmise that tonight did not happen by accident? I do not believe in the occurrence of accidents when it comes to events that change the course. Such as this, I came out tonight to see how I might change the world, instead I ended up in the company of a very attractive woman who seems to believe she can only imitate what she desires.” Raven wanted to say that nothing good every looked out for her, ever heard her prayers, but Raven wondered if Umbra might take that as an offense as he appeared to be trying to look out for her. A hand was offered. “Allow me to take you somewhere, I wish to show you that what you believe is not only wrong but is what might hold you back from healing from whatever wound is holding you in its grasps of pain” Raven was cautious, Azarath had meant to be a place to master her emotions but it had not lasted. it's always do this, do that * everything they want to * Michael lightly took Ravens hand in his and backed towards the shadows, leading her into oblivion.
“You need not be cautious or be afraid or uncertain of what I have to show you. It is both death and destruction, but it is neither future nor past. It is what it is.” The place ran into his mind almost immediately, he remembered taking the kid to the church and even had helped with the medical bill that they couldn’t pay. He hadn’t been Umbra while doing it, and he could only guess that it would be strange if he was when he arrived. So as he led Raven into the darkness, holding her hand a bit tighter to keep her from being lost in the darkness he prepared himself for atleast one hero to know whome he really was. The shadows did as they always did when he entered they’re realm, the reached out and clung to him as well as Raven. Begging silently for them to be pulled into the embrace of nothingness, to lose themselves to oblivion, but by now he was so used to it that he only moved on, walking through it like he would if it were water in a knee high pond. The doorways of other shadows ran on either side of them, opening to portals into the world he and Raven belonged, yet none of them were exactly the one he needed yet.
“I am going to do something unusual, but you must promise me to keep it a secret.” His words were only spoken when he had seen the shadow of a hospital room bathroom that had the door open, leading into the boys bed. He had made sure it was so that he could visit without anyone asking questions, well that and paying off a couple staff members, maybe his dads money was good for something sometimes. “I do believe you will understand why.” They moved closer to the seam, his free hand reaching to his face and sliding off his mask before they stepped out of the chaotic darkness and into the light.
Fresh air hit them with an almost overwhelming sterile hospital smell. He could only imagine how Raven thought about all of this. She probably had gone threw or seen worse but Michael honestly hated the Shadow realm, he just used it like a tool when he needed it. He could only imagine what would happen if those shadows actually dragged him in. No, he couldn’t think of that now, he was there for a reason, and that reason was Raven. Michael turned and looked at her, his realy face framed by the wig that he still wore, his mask still clutched in his hand that had moved to his side.
“Before you is a boy, a boy I found under a bridge overdosed and broken. Someone had taken all his money and beaten him for good measure for fun. I carried him carefully to a church and they helped me get him to this hospital. What I didn’t know was he was the pastors son, a boy lost in an overwhelming world. I stayed here with his father until he woke up. When he did he said one thing when he saw his father, ‘I don’t know how, but even when things went dark I could see light.’ Most wouldn’t know what that meant but I did. He had lost himself, fallen so deep into darkness that there was no way out. He had hardened himself to almost nothingness, yet even then there was a way out.” Michael moved over to the boy and sat down on the stool next to him.
“Even in darkness there is light Raven, it just takes all your will and strength to get to it, something we all have…even you.”

But the teenager already had a thought that no matter what Umbra said, she would always know that she was a dark force, one to not be trusted. Unfortunately she knew that she had blood on her hands, darkness and nightmares in her soul. Following Umbra, Raven did not give the shadows a second thought. “You need not be cautious or be afraid or uncertain of what I have to show you. It is both death and destruction, but it is neither future nor past. It is what it is.” It wasn't like Raven was going to allow herself to feel afraid. Not consciously at least.
The shadows clinging to them was not something that the teenager was used to. Her soul-self was dark but there was nothing there. It appeared to be space, with planets and stars when really it was just loneliness. It was inviting to be welcomed by the shadows. If it had not been for the tightened grip on her hand, Raven wondered whether she would move away to follow the silent beckons of the darkness. She was not aware if she had pulled slightly against his hold. “I am going to do something unusual, but you must promise me to keep it a secret.” A door was opening. “I do believe you will understand why.”
"I will keep the secret." |
[/b] Raven said, although wondering if she would feel the same as Pride. It was not too hard to figure out that Pride would keep her secret out of a matter of pride. It seemed like the secret would be protected no matter what happened to Raven. Then there was fresh air as well as light and Raven could tell that they were in hospital. There was pain around her, worry over whelming the little happiness. Hospitals were not the empath's favorite places. After the calm of the shadows and peace of the night, the forever active and emotional hospital was almost like stepping into a scalding shower. She preferred the shadows. It appeared that there was a more specific reason to coming to the hospital other than feeling the hope battle the despair, the life verse the death. A certain boy. Concern flooded Raven, an emotion that she found easiest to deal with and hardest to ignore. Even when facing those who wanted to destroy, Raven found herself knowing what emotions had driven them and pitying them. She tried to help and even if she had to harm others she still felt concern. Indigo eyes softly took in the child, she could see the light within him. Even from where she stood, she could sense the bright soul within him. It was a beautiful thing to behold, the soul that humans possessed. “Even in darkness there is light Raven, it just takes all your will and strength to get to it, something we all have…even you.” Skeptical eyes flickered to Umbra. "I'm sorry but I know the darkness is within me and I cannot escape. I may try my best but I have fallen and cannot be trusted."[/b] Raven said, turning once more to look at the poor child. The teenager was trying to see if she could heal him. She did not feel his pain, it was no physical injury. Her powers would be unlikely to speed up his recovery. It made her feel sorrow that she could not find a way to help. [/style] tags:Umbra word count: ??? muse: Within Temptation notes: None Table Layout By BRY, 2012[/style][/td][/tr][/table][/center]

it's always do this, do that * everything they want to *
Michael sighed and shook his head. He didn’t see how someone could put themselves in such a set state of mind like Raven had. He already found her very interesting, but more to the point he was starting to feel protective of her. Not in the way most were, more like the way where someone needed to help someone who was cutting themselves deep. She was driving her nail hard into the ground and Michael could only think that putting his hand in the way would stop her. He fixed his uncovered eyes on hers and dropped the whisper, allowing his Aussie accent to escape into his voice fully.
“Maybe you don’t exactly see what I see even now but eventually you will. People who are really without hope do not have emotions, are not worried about others. You my girl have concern written all over that pretty face of yours. Now I think this guy needs some sleep, so let’s shanks pony out of here shall we?” Michael patted the boys arm, said a silent prayer, then walked over to the shadows where he again extended a gloved hand. She could see his face now, probably one of the very few heroes that would be seeing his real face. Yet what he wanted her to see was the caring in his eyes, the confusion at her stance and the hope that he could be her friend and help her out. Whatever happened after tonight he hoped she would see that the new guy in front of her was not all just about fighting, he wanted to help others no matter what it took and in what way.

Soft hands touched his face as she tried to find some way to help. Such young life should not have to suffer like she did. “Maybe you don’t exactly see what I see even now but eventually you will. People who are really without hope do not have emotions, are not worried about others. You my girl have concern written all over that pretty face of yours. Now I think this guy needs some sleep, so let’s shanks pony out of here shall we?”
Reluctantly, Raven removed her hands and took several steps back. "I should not allow myself to feel. It is dangerous." |
[/b] Raven replied, her voice back to being emotionless. Maybe there was hope but it seemed that every time that things eventually started to become positive, something would pull her back down. Usually it was her own darkness, the pure evil that had been the cause of her birth. The hand was offered again and Raven's indigo eyes looked up at the unmasked face. The emotions across his face was not what she saw. A mask was no good at hiding the emotions from Raven. The main thing that Raven noted about the lack of the mask was that it showed some level of trust. “Not everyone gives up so easily Raven.” Silently, the teenager took the offered hand. "I haven't given up. That doesn't mean that I can't be aware of my own darkness and the fact that I can never be trusted. It is better to have precautions than to hope for the best and to fall when it inevitably collapses to be pulled down with it."[/b] Raven said, her view of things were probably rather dark. There was a moment's pause and then Raven spoke again. "Would you mind if I took you somewhere? To show you something?"[/b] Raven asked, softly. If he agreed she would show him her soul-self and maybe have the courage to tell him the full truth about herself. That she was the child of a powerful demon, that she was the Sin from which the others came from. Doctor Fate's scales may had have said that she was worthy but it did not let Raven forget that she was a demon, that the judgement had been reserved for demons only. There were so many things that proved that she was seperate and not to be trusted.
